MADISON, S.D. – Viterbo (Wis.), top-ranked team in the NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 national poll, outhit Dakota State (S.D.) 54-26 Friday evening for a 3-0 North Star Athletic Association Volleyball conference victory at R.W. Beggs Gymnasium.  The V-Hawks won by the score of 26-24, 25-12 and 25-21.

Dakota State fell to 4-18 overall record and 2-5 record in North Star conference play.  Viterbo remained undefeated this season with an overall record of 19-0 and 6-0 NSAA conference record.


Dakota State opened up with an 8-6 lead in the opening set.  Viterbo answered with a 5-0 scoring outburst for an 11-8 lead, forcing the Trojans to use their first timeout.  The V-Hawks expanded their lead up to five points at 18-13 and 22-17 before the Dakota State made a comeback to tie the first set. 

DSU used a 6-1 run to knot at 23-23.  After VU earned a point for a 24-23 lead, Carly Rozell smashed a kill to tie at 24-24.  The V-Hawks secured the first set by scoring the final two points for 26-24 win and 1-0 match lead. 

Viterbo had 19 kills in the opening set compared to Dakota State 11 kills.  The V-Hawks hit .317 (6 errors in 41 attempts) while the Trojans recorded a hitting percentage of .226 (4 errors in 31 attempts).


The V-Hawks dominated the second set by outhitting the Trojans 17-4 for a 25-12 victory, extending the match lead to 2-0.  Viterbo hit .433, committing 4 attack errors in 30 attempts.  Dakota State registered a hitting efficiency of .000 (4 errors in 25 attempts).


Viterbo jumped to a 16-8 lead in the third set.  Trailing 20-12, Dakota State trimmed VU's lead down to 24-21 after a 9-4 scoring run but could get no closer.  VU secured the match victory after recording a 25-21 set three win.  Viterbo hit .209 (18 kills with 9 errors in 43 attempts) compared to Dakota State .206 hitting efficiency (11 kills with 4 errors in 34 attempts).


Samantha Zell smashed seven kills for the Trojans.  Maddie Polzin and Jazmayne Williams each added five kills.  Rozell had four kills.  Rachel Johnson contributed 14 set assists, while Kendra Steffen had 11 assists.

Williams led DSU's defense with seven digs.  Johnson, Rozell and Alwaise Villa each collected five digs.  Mallory Testerman and Villa each registered two service aces.

Rozell had three block assists for Dakota State.  Zell and Kaylee Spreier each added two block assists.

Hannah Erickson had 12 kills and hit .320 for Viterbo.  Natalie Geidel and Miah Garant each added nine kills.  Amelia Grahn produced 40 assists and recorded 9 digs.  She also had a solo block and a block assist.

Baylee Gross led the V-Hawks with 15 digs.  Aubrey Aspen had two block assists. 

Viterbo hit .307 in the match (54 kills with 19 errors in 114 attempts) compared to Dakota State .156 hitting percentage (26 kills with 12 errors in 90 attempts).  The Trojans had four service aces while the V-Hawks recorded three aces.

DSU registered four team blocks compared to VU three team blocks.  The V-Hawks' defense collected 45 digs.  The Trojans had 31 digs.


Dakota State continues their six-match road trip Saturday afternoon for another North Star volleyball action.  The Trojans visit Waldorf (Iowa) with a first serve scheduled for 1 p.m. at Hanson Fieldhouse in Forest City, Iowa.

Viterbo stays home Saturday as they host Presentation (S.D.) in the North Star Athletic Association conference action.
