MADISON, S.D. - After having a week off, the Dakota State University cross country women's and men's runners returned back to action last Saturday. The Trojans hosted its own meet, the Herb Blakely Invitational, at the Madison Country Club.
Both DSU women's and men's cross country teams captured the team titles. Each team scored 32 team points in the event. Schools from Briar Cliff, Mount Marty, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, South Dakota State, South Dakota School of Mines, Presentation and the DSU Alumni participated in the race.
All five Trojan women placed in the top 12 to capture first place out of six teams. Stephanie Warnke claimed the individual title in 19 minutes and 38.34 seconds. Stephanie's sister, Samantha Warnke, came in fourth with the time of 20:23.79.
Brittany Young crossed the finish line in sixth place with a time of 20:25.51. Suzanne Swett placed ninth in 20:32.14 and Clarice Bauer came in 12th, with a 20:52.38.
A total of 58 runners competed in the event.
Dordt came in second with 53 points. Mount Marty finished third with 79 points. NCAA Division I South Dakota State placed fourth with 85 points. Briar Cliff was fifth with 110 points and South Dakota School of Mines placed sixth with 154 points.
Three DSU men's runners finished in the top three places to help the Trojans to the team's title. Anthony Drealan earned first place with a time of 26:04.47. Tyler Van Peursem came in second with a time of 26:35.46 and Devon Berkness was third in the finish time of 26:44.79.
Matt Fideler placed eighth with a time of 27:34.53. Anthony Manning came in 20th with a time of 28:49.43 and John Bintliff crossed the finish line with 21st place with a finish time of 28:54.78.
Other Trojan place finishers were: Michael Hoffman, 25th, 29:17.67; Ben Harrison, 35th, 30:21.03; Kyle Sanderson, 42nd, 30:57.35; Keith Huffman, 43rd, 31:01.27; Cody Foreman, 47th, 31:20.65; Andy Quenzer, 61st, 33:07.75; Ethan Shafer, 65th, 33:46.59 and Bryan Wolfe, 71st, 36:18.05.
There was a total of 77 runners competed in the men's race.
Dordt finished second with 58 points. South Dakota School of Mines was third with 86 points, followed by Dakota Wesleyan with 94 points. Mount Marty was fifth with 116 points and Briar Cliff placed sixth with 135 points. Presentation was seventh with 217 points.
The DSU women's and men's cross country teams will travel to St. Paul, Minn. on Saturday. The Trojans will be participating in the tough Roy Griak Invitational, hosted by NCAA Division I University of Minnesota. Women's race is slated at 9:45 a.m., with the men's to follow.
