The Dakota State Trojan men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2009 campaign with an impressive showing at the Don Baker Invitational Saturday in Vermillion, S.D. hosted by NCAA Division I University of South Dakota. Also featured in the meet were NCAA Division II Augustana College, Wayne State and NAIA schools. No team scores were kept in the meet.
Four Trojan men's runners finished in top 20. Tyler Van Peursem crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 26:15.85 in the 8K race. Rob Gregoire from USD captured the individual title with a time of 26:07.88. Anthony Drealan (Fulda, Minn.) placed sixth with a time of 26:27.37.
DSU's Devon Berkness was 15th with a time of 27:31.27, and Matt Fideler finished in 17th with a time of 27:33.68.
Other Trojans place finishers were: Andrew Manning (34th, 29:02.77); John Bintliff (40th, 29:49.66); Michael Hoffman (47th, 30:48.47); Ben Harrison (48th, 30:54.49); Kyle Sanderson (56th, 31:47.06); Keith Huffman (57th, 31:48.42); Bryan Wolfe (64th, 32:51.47); Cody Foreman (66th, 33:12.07); Andy Quenzer (69th, 34:04.25) and Ethan Shafer (76th, 36:16.26).
In a strong women's race meet that featured fourth ranked NCAA Division II Augustana College, Dakota State runners finished all of their runners in the top 40, in the 76 runner race. Trojan Stephanie Warnke finished the meet in 23rd place with a time of 20:16.83 in the 5K race.
DSU's Brittany Young, in her first collegiate cross country meet, placed 29th in 20 minutes and 30.23 seconds.
Other Trojan finishers were: Samantha Warnke finished 31st with a time of 20:48.40. Suzanne Swett came in 33rd with a time of 20:51.53. Clarice Bauer ran a time of 21:24.85 for a 39th place finish.
The Trojan runners will have a week off, until they host the Herb Blakely Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19th. The women's race will start at 10:30 a.m. with the men's to follow at the Madison Country Club.
