THIS WEEK: Dakota State (10-28 overall record) heads in the postseason play in the NAIA Baseball Unaffiliated Conference Tournament Wednesday at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown, N.D. The unaffiliated tournament consists of five teams from the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) and Frontier conferences.
NAIA BASEBALL UNAFFILIATED CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT: Dakota State is the No. 5 seed for the NAIA Baseball Unaffiliated Conference Tournament. The Trojans kick off the postseason play on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. versus No. 4 seed Valley City State (N.D.) (13-24). No. 3 seed Dickinson State (25-18) takes on No. 2 seed and host-team Jamestown (N.D.) (25-9) at 2:30 p.m. The tournament's top-seed team Mayville State (N.D.) (32-4-1) will play at 6 p.m. against the winner of Dakota State-Valley City State game. The double-elimination tournament runs through Friday afternoon with a championship game set for 2:30 p.m. If necessary, the second championship game will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. All games will be at the Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown, N.D.
AUTOMATIC BID: The winner of the NAIA Baseball Unaffiliated Conference Tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round. The event will be played on May 9-13 and features nine five-team double elimination tournaments. The 45 qualifiers and brackets for the National Championship Opening Round will be announced on May 5. The nine Opening Round champions join host Lewis-Clark state (Idaho) to make up the field at the 2013 Avista-NAIA World Series at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho on May 24-31. The nine cities that will host the Opening Round are: Kingsport (Tenn.), Joliet (Ill.), Dayton Beach (Fla.), Montgomery (Ala.), Cleveland (Tenn.), Oklahoma City, Claremore (Okla.), Santa Clarita (Calif.) and Hattiesburg (Miss.).

DSU LAST TIME POSTSEASON: Dakota State was the last time to qualify for the A.I.I. Baseball Conference Tournament last season. The Trojans opened the conference tournament by upsetting the top-seed and host-team Cal State San Marcos 3-2. DSU lost the second-round game to Mayville State (N.D.). Dakota State went on to win two straight elimination games versus Thomas (Ga.) and Arizona Christian to earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round. The Trojans lost to Arizona Christian in the A.I.I. Baseball Conference Tournament's championship game. In the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening Round in the Hutchinson (Kan.) bracket, DSU was eliminated from the postseason play as they lost to Tabor (Kan.) and Judson (Ill.).
TROJANS BEAT DWU IN A SLUGFEST: Dakota State rallied back to defeat their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in an 18-14 extra-innings slugfest at Drake Field in Mitchell, S.D. on April 26. The game took four hours and 45 minutes. The Trojans trailed by six runs before mounting a late rally to earn their fifth straight meeting victory over the Tigers.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State played three different South Dakota teams last week, including two opponents against NCAA schools. The Trojans fell short to NCAA Division I South Dakota State after earning the first lead of the gameâ€”14-7 and 11-7 in Sioux City, Iowa on April 24. The Trojans bounced back in the winning column on April 26 with an 18-14 11 innings victory over in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell. DSU dropped their regular-season finale against NCAA Division II Augustana on 13-4 on April 27 in Sioux Falls.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Kyle Holland leads the Trojans' offense attack with a batting average of .341 (42 hits). Anyelo Roman records 36 runs batted in (1.1 RBIs per gameâ€”17th best in the nation in RBIs per game). He ranks eighth in the nation in home runs per game (0.3) and 21st in total home runs with eight. Rays Roman swipes 22 bases this season and currently holds the DSU school record in career stolen bases with 43. He is 27th in the nation in stolen bases per game (0.6). Kevin Madera records an earned runs average of 4.67 (23 earned runs) on the pitching mound. He accumulates a total of 41 strikeouts (8.32 strikeouts per nine innings).
