SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Dakota State jumped to an early lead in both games Wednesday afternoon at Sioux City East High School against NCAA Division I South Dakota State. The Jackrabbits rallied back to earn a doubleheader sweep (seven-inning games) over the Trojans by the scores of 14-7 and 11-7.
Dakota State lost their fourth straight game and dropped their overall record to 9-27. South Dakota State, a member of the Summit League, raised their overall record to 19-12.
Game 1 - South Dakota State 14, Dakota State (S.D.) 7 - BOX SCORE
Dakota State earned a six-run lead in the second inning, but SDSU outscored the Trojans 14-1 to seal the first game of the doubleheader.
Andy Lee and Danny Flahie hit back-to-back singles with one out in the top second frame for DSU. Kyle Braun reached on base by a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans. Kyle Holland recorded an RBI single to score Lee to give DSU their first lead of the game at 1-0. Rays Roman blasted a grand slam home run as DSU's lead grew to 5-0. The Trojans made it 6-0 when Anyelo Roman hit a solo home run.
The Jackrabbits answered back with six runs in the bottom third inning to tie the game. Daniel Telford hit a 2-RBI double as SDSU scored their first runs of the game. SDSU added four more runs - all by two outs RBI singles by Scott Spleet, Daniel Marra, Reid Clary and Andrew Melton - as the game was knotted at 6-all.
Telford smashed a 2-run home run in the bottom fourth inning as SDSU gained an 8-6 lead.
Rays Roman hit a solo home run in the top fifth as DSU trimmed Jackrabbits' lead to 8-7.
South Dakota State exploded for six runs in the bottom sixth inning as they extended their lead to 14-7. SDSU had six hits in the inning, including doubles from Eric Danforth and Marra. The Trojans committed two errors in the inning.
DSU went three-and-out in the final inning as SDSU claimed the victory.
Rays Roman had two home runs (his fourth and fifth home runs this season) and produced five RBIs for the Trojans. Holland and Lee each added two singles. Kevin Madera and Flahie each had a hit.
Anyelo Roman extended the DSU school record career home run to 25 after hitting a home run in the second inning.
South Dakota State recorded five doubles in the game, two doubles from Marra and Danforth. Telford had a home run and a double with four RBIs. Robbins, Marra and Danforth each had three hits. Michael Finochhiaro, Marra and Melton each had two RBIs.
The Jackrabbits outhit the Trojans 17-9.
SDSU had eight runners left on base. DSU left one runner on base.
Anyelo Roman started the game for the Trojans. He pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on four hits. Drew Sweeter worked for 1/3 inning in relief and gave up two runs on four hits. Seth Rockafellow (1-2) picked up the loss as he pitched two innings in relief. He allowed two runs on three hits. Madera pitched for 2/3 innings and gave up four unearned runs on two hits. Jamie Jorgensen worked for 1/3 innings and allowed two unearned runs on four hits.
Shane Kraemer was the starting pitcher for SDSU. He tossed three innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. The Jackrabbits used four different pitchers for one inning each in relief. Talon Jumper (1-3) recorded the victory as he pitched a shutout fourth inning.
Game 2 - South Dakota State 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 7 - BOX SCORE
In the nightcap, the Trojans earned the first lead in the opening inning. Rays Roman hit a single with one out. Rays Roman swiped to second base, extending his career record of 42 stolen bases at DSU. After Flahie reached on base by a walk, Ryan Bourcier hit an RBI single to score Rays Roman for a 1-0 DSU lead. Madera added an RBI single to score Flahie to extend Trojans' lead to 2-0. Kyle Braun recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Bourcier to give Dakota State a 3-0 lead.
Nick Andrews hit a 2-run home run in the bottom first frame as SDSU cut Trojans' lead to 3-2.
The Jackrabbits tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom third inning caused by DSU's defensive error. Jordan Varga added a 3-run home run as SDSU earned their first lead of the game at 6-3.
Chaz Palmer opened the fourth inning with a single for the Trojans. He advanced to second base by SDSU's wild pitch. Holland hit an RBI single to score Palmer as DSU reduced their deficit to 6-4.
South Dakota State produced another four-run inning as they expand their lead in the bottom fourth. The Jackrabbits scored twice caused by DSU's defensive miscue, a hit-by-pitch with bases loaded and fielder's choice RBI as their lead grew to 10-4.
Dakota State scored three runs in the top fifth inning to bring the game within 10-7 in favor of SDSU. Braun reached on base by a walk. Palmer hit a single to advance Braun to second base. Holland recorded an RBI single to score Braun as SDSU's lead was reduced to 10-5. Palmer added a run caused by Jackrabbits' defensive error (10-6 SDSU). Flahie hit an RBI single to score Rays Roman as DSU trailed by three runs.
Cody Sharrow hit an RBI single as SDSU added a run in the bottom sixth frame for the score of 11-7.
The Trojans could not convert their scoring opportunity in the final inning as the Jackrabbits held on to the victory. DSU left two runners when the game ended.
Holland was 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, two singles and two RBIs for DSU. Flahie was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI. Bourcier, Madera and Palmer each had two singles. Rays Roman had a single.
Madera and Seth Spears each had two walks for Dakota State.
Varga produced four RBIs with a home run for SDSU. Sharrow added a double and three singles. Andrews had a home run and recorded three RBIs. Zach Coppola, Finochhiaro and Zach Holt each had a hit.
Dakota State left 15 runners on base in the game. The Jackrabbits had seven runners left on base.
The Trojans committed five defensive errors while SDSU had one error.
DSU outhit the Jackrabbits 13-9.
Josh Caven (1-3) recorded the loss for the Trojans. He tossed 2 2/3 innings and allowed six runs (one unearned) on six hits. Rockafellow worked for 1/3 innings and gave up four unearned runs on two hits. Luke Gassman pitched one shutout inning. Josh Grissom worked in the fifth inning and gave up one unearned run on one hit. Evan Steemken tossed a scoreless sixth inning.
Nick Young started the game for SDSU. He worked for 1 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits. Joe Erickson worked for 2/3 innings in relief, allowing one hit. Aaron Klatt (1-0) recorded the victory as he pitched 1 2/3 innings. He allowed one run on three hits and recorded three strikeouts. Kenton Welbig worked in the sixth inning and gave up one hit. Andrew Clemen closed the game as he pitched in the seventh inning. He allowed two hits.
Dakota State continues their action on the road Friday evening. The Trojans visit their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan. First pitch for the nine-inning game is set for 6 p.m. at the Caldwell Park/Drake Field in Mitchell, S.D.
