CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY. - Dakota State was unable to score Saturday as Campbellsville swept the Trojans 3-0 and 7-0 in baseball action at the HIG Field. The Tigers swept the three-game series with DSU.
Dakota State lost their eight straight game and dropped their overall record to 3-12. Campbellsville, a member of the Mid-South Conference, raised their overall record to 12-4.
Game 1 - Campbellsville (Ky.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 - BOX SCORE
CU earned its first lead of the game in the bottom third inning. Keaton Neeb opened with a double. Levi McCamish, courtesy runner for Neeb, advanced to third base after a sacrifice bunt by Shane Woodson. Tanner Scott recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score McCamish to give Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers added a run in the bottom fourth frame by a wild pitch to extend CU's lead to 2-0.
Campbellsville made it 3-0 in the bottom fifth as Scott recorded an RBI sacrifice bunt to score McCamish.
Dakota State was limited to one hit in the game.
Kevin Madera had a single for the Trojans. Kyle Braun and Seth Spears each had a walk.
The Tigers had four hits in the game, led by Neeb with a double and a single. Scott produced two RBIs. Shayne Kelly and Josh Potter each added a single.
Both teams left three runners on base.
Josh Caven (0-1) took the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State. He worked for five innings and allowed three runs (one unearned run) on four hits. Luke Gassman tossed 1/3 inning in relief. Jamie Jorgensen worked for 2/3 innings and gave up a walk.
CU's Tyler Schmunk (2-1) tossed four innings for the victory. He allowed one hit and recorded four strikeouts. Matt Robertson recorded his first save of the season by pitching the final three shutout innings.
Game 2 - Campbellsville (Ky.) 7, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 - BOX SCORE
The Tigers jumped to a 3-0 early lead in the first inning. Josh Potter recorded an RBI single to give CU a 1-0 lead. Aaron Schwoebel hit an RBI double and added another run caused by DSU's defensive error to give Tigers a three-run lead.
Tanner Nielsen hit a single with two outs in the bottom half of the second inning. He swiped for second base and third base. Nielsen then scored by a wild pitch to widen CU's lead to 4-0.
Campbellsville produced three straight singles to open the bottom fourth frame. The Tigers scored once as DSU made a double-play as CU's lead grew to 5-0.
The Tigers added two runs in the bottom sixth inning as CU's lead expanded by seven runs.
Corey Pasichnyk, Chaz Palmer and Drew Sweeter each had a single for Dakota State.
Scott and Schwoebel each had a double and a single for Campbellsville. Potter added two singles. Nieslen, Michael Bush, Travis Hayes and Angelo Simmons each added a hit. Potter, Schwoebel and Hayes each had an RBI.
The Tigers outhit the Trojans 10-3. DSU committed four defensive errors.
Kevin Madera (0-3) recorded the loss for DSU. He pitched three innings and allowed five runs (two unearned) on seven hits. Seth Rockafellow pitched two innings and gave up two hits. Spears pitched one inning in relief and allowed two runs (one unearned) on one hit.
Sean Bouthilette (2-2) notched the victory as he worked the first five innings of the game. He limited DSU to two hits and recorded eight strikeouts. Mason Yates worked the sixth inning and gave up a hit. Jeff Larabee tossed the seventh shutout inning.
Dakota State looks to end their losing streak as they continue their road action next weekend. The Trojans head to Hastings, Neb. for a four-game series with Hastings (Neb.) on Saturday and Sunday.
