JAMESTOWN, N.D. - The Dakota State University men's basketball team traveled to the Civic Center Wednesday evening for an Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference game with Jamestown (N.D.). The Trojans built a double-digit lead and held off JC's late-game rally for a 66-60 victory. The win gave DSU their 19th victory of the season for the first time since 1991-92 season.
Dakota State won their fifth game in the last six games to raise their overall record to 19-8 and 5-2 A.I.I. DSU's 19 wins is tied for the second most victories in a single season in the Trojan men's basketball record book (1991-92 season). Jamestown dropped their overall record to 12-17 and 3-6 A.I.I.
DSU and JC went through five ties and five lead changes in the first ten minutes and 49 seconds of the game.
At 16-16, the Trojans went on a 14-2 scoring tear to earn a 30-18 lead with 5:04 left before intermission.
Jamestown used a 13-7 closing run as DSU held a 37-31 halftime advantage.
The Trojans shot 50 percent from the field (11-for-22) in the first twenty minutes of the game. DSU was 5-for-12 from the 3-point arc (41.7 percent) and 10-for-14 at the free-throw line (71.4 percent). The Jimmies were 43.3 percent from the field (13-for-30) and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
DSU started the second-half with a 11-2 scoring run to earn the biggest lead of the game at 48-33 (16:08 remaining).
With the Trojans leading at 62-53 with 2:40 left, the Jimmies scored seven straight points to trim DSU's lead at 62-60 with 1:10 remaining.
The Trojans secured the game as Yusuf Vinson nailed down a field goal and Luke Lamb made two-free-throws in the final 40 seconds of the game.
DSU was 8-for-20 from the field (40 percent) in the second-half compared to the Jimmies' 34.8 percent 8-for-23). The Trojans were 10-for-14 from the free-throw line (71.4 percent), while JC made 12 free-throws in 15 attempts (80 percent).
Luke Lamb poured in 18 points for Dakota State. He was 4-for-9 from the field and 3-for-6 from the 3-point range. He was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Yusuf Vinson added 13 points. Marcus Smith scored 11 points off the bench. John Lamb had eight points.
Luke Lamb pulled down eight rebounds for DSU. Vinson and Keith Lee II each added five rebounds.
John Lamb dished out five assists for the Trojans. He had two steals.
Mark Hoge scored 19 points for the Jimmies. Davon Thomas added 11 points. Taylor Newton had nine points off the bench.
Thomas earned nine rebounds for JC. Jared Sutherland added five rebounds.
Sutherland, Breshion Tucker and Newton each had two assists for Jamestown.
Dakota State shot 45.2 percent overall from the field (19-for-42) compared to JC's 39.6 percent (21-for-53). The Trojans drained eight 3-pointers in 18 attempts (44.4 percent). The Jimmies struggled from the 3-point arc, shooting 3-for-18 (16.7 percent).
DSU nailed down 20 free-throws in 27 attempts in the game (71.4 percent). JC was 15-for-19 from the free-throw line (78.9 percent).
Jamestown outrebounded the Trojans 30-26.
Dakota State plays their final regular-season game on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans visit No. 20 Valley City State (N.D.) in an A.I.I. conference game. Tip-off from the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse is set for 4 p.m. in Valley City, N.D.
