CROFTON, Neb. - Dakota State (S.D.) continues their recent baseball dominance with their in-state rival Mount Marty (S.D.) Tuesday evening at the Crofton Baseball Park. The Trojans produced their first doubleheader sweep of the season, defeating the Lancers 9-1 in the first game and 11-6 extra inning victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
Dakota State won their third game in the last four games, raising their overall record to 8-19. The Trojans had won the last six games in the series meeting with Mount Marty. The Lancers, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), dropped their overall record to 9-15.
The doubleheader was made up from Monday (April 1) due to cold weather.
Game 1 - Dakota State (S.D.) 9, Mount Marty (S.D.) 1 - BOX SCORE
The Trojans scored twice in the opening inning to earn their first lead of the game. Kyle Holland hit a double with one out. Danny Flahie reached on base by a walk with two outs. Holland and Flahie each advanced one base caused by MMC AJ Griffith's balk. Ryan Bourcier hit a 2-RBI single to score Holland and Flahie to give DSU a 2-0 early lead.
Dakota State continues to add runs in the top second frame. Corey Pasichnyk opened with a walk. He swiped for second base. Kyle Braun hit a single and Pasichnyk advanced to third base. Rays Roman recorded a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans. Holland produced an RBI walk to score Pasichnyk to extend DSU's lead to 3-0. The Trojans made it 4-0 when Anyelo Roman hit an RBI single to score Braun. Bourcier added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Holland to wide DSU's lead to 5-0.
Kevin Madera smashed his first home run of the season in the top of the third inning to make it 6-0 in favor of Dakota State.
The Trojans added two runs in the top fourth frame to expand their lead by eight runs, thanks to Anyelo Roman's 2-run home run. It was his sixth home run of the season and extended DSU's school record career home run to 23.
Jared Miller hit a solo home run to break Lancers' scoring drought in the bottom fourth inning. MMC trimmed DSU's lead to 8-1.
DSU's Holland hit an RBI single in the top fifth inning to make it 9-1.
Dakota State sealed the game as the Lancers went three-and-out in the final inning.
Madera was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a home run, three singles and an RBI for the Trojans. Anyelo Roman added two hits and three RBIs. Bourcier recorded two singles and three RBIs. Holland had a double, a single and two RBIs. Rays Roman and Braun each had a hit.
Miller went 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run, two singles and an RBI for Mount Marty. Bryton Carlson and Tyler Elder each had a single.
DSU outhit the Lancers 12-5.
The Trojans left nine runners on base. Mount Marty had five runners left on base.
Austin Weber (3-2) tossed a complete game victory for DSU. He allowed one run on five hits.
Griffith (1-4) recorded the loss for the Lancers. He pitched the first inning and gave up two runs on three hits. Asau Rodriguez worked for four innings in relief. He allowed seven runs (one unearned) on eight hits. Josh Homme pitched in the sixth inning and limited DSU to one hit. Carlson tossed a shutout seventh inning in relief.
Game 2 - Dakota State (S.D.) 11, Mount Marty (S.D.) 6 (9 innings) - BOX SCORE
Dakota State lit the scoreboard first in the top first inning with a solo home run by Rays Roman. It was his third home run of the season.
The Trojans added a run in the top third frame to extend their lead. Seth Spears was hit-by-pitch to open the inning. Holland hit a double to advance Spears to third base. Flahie recorded an RBI ground out to score Spears to make it 2-0 in favor of Dakota State.
After recording two quick outs in the top fourth inning, DSU scored three times to increase their lead. Pasichnyk reached on base by MMC's defensive miscue. Spears reached on base by a walk and advanced Pasichynk to second base. A passed ball by MMC Nick Sehr advanced Pasichynk to third and Nathan Wieneke (courtesy runner for Spears) to second base. Rays Roman produced a 2-RBI single to score Pasichnyk and Wieneke to extend DSU's lead to 4-0. Rays Roman swiped for second base. Holland added an RBI single to score Rays Roman to give a five-run lead for the Trojans.
The Lancers answered back with three runs scored in the bottom fourth frame. Miller opened the inning with a walk. Carlson was hit-by-pitch, advancing Miller to second base. Mathias Godsil hit an RBI double to score Miller for Lancers' first run of the game. Carlson scored by a passed ball by DSU Spears as MMC cut DSU's lead to 5-2. Mike O'Connell hit an RBI sacrifice fly as Mount Marty reduced their deficit to 5-3.
MMC Zac Hollenback recorded an RBI single in the fifth inning to trim DSU's lead to 5-4.
The Trojans scored once in the top half of the sixth inning caused by Lancers' defensive error. DSU's lead grew to 6-4.
Alex Mueller hit a 2-RBI double in the bottom sixth frame to tie the game at 6-6.
DSU was unable to convert their scoring opportunities in the top seventh inning as they left two runners on base.
The Trojans' defense held in the bottom seventh as Mount Marty went three-and-out. The game was extended into extra innings.
Dakota State left two runners on base in the top eighth inning and did not score.
MMC opened the bottom eighth inning with a double by Nik Davis. He advanced to third base after O'Connel reached first base caused by DSU's defensive miscue. DSU's Anyelo Roman retired three straight batters to close the eighth inning as MMC left runners on third and second base.
The Trojans put together a five-run ninth inning to regain their lead. Madera reached on base by a walk to open the inning. Chaz Palmer made it to first base caused by MMC's defensive error and advanced Madera to second base. Braun recorded a bunt single to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans. With one out, Anyelo Roman was hit-by-pitch and scored Madera as DSU earned a 7-6 lead. Rays Roman hit a 3-RBI triple as DSU's lead grew to 10-6. Holland added an RBI single to score Rays Roman for an 11-6 lead.
DSU secured the game as Mount Marty left one runner on base when the game ended.
Rays Roman produced a season-high six RBIs for the Trojans. He had a home run, a triple, a single and recorded four runs. Holland went perfect at the plate, going 5-for-5 with a double, four singles and two RBIs. Bourcier had a double. Flahie, Palmer, Braun and Wieneke each had a hit.
Rays Roman swiped two bases for DSU.
Davis had two hits for Mount Marty. Mueller recorded a double and recorded two RBIs. Hollenback, Tyler Elder, Carlson, Godsil and O'Connell each had a hit.
Dakota State outhit the Lancers 13-8.
The Trojans left 12 runners on base. MMC had eight runners left on base.
Michael Crain started the game on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed four innings and allowed four runs on two hits. Jamie Jorgensen pitched two innings in relief and gave up two runs on four hits. Josh Caven worked in the seventh inning and limited MMC to one hit. Anyelo Roman (1-2) recorded the victory as he pitched the eighth and ninth innings. He gave up one hit.
Brandon Bainbridge pitched the first three innings for the Lancers. He allowed two runs on three hits. Taylor Klapperich tossed two innings in relief and gave up three unearned on three hits. Ben Elliott (0-1) suffered the loss as he worked for three innings. He allowed four runs (two unearned) on four hits. Elliot struck out six DSU's batters. Josh Homme pitched one inning and gave up two runs on three hits.
Dakota State is scheduled to play a home game at Flynn Field on Monday (April 8). The Trojans host another member of the GPAC - Morningside (Iowa) - in a nine-inning game. The game time will be announced on a later date.
