KYLE, S.D. - Trailing 54-50 at halftime Sunday afternoon at the Multipurpose Gym, the Dakota State men's basketball team outscored Oglala Lakota (S.D.) 61-41 in the second-half to earn a 111-95 victory.
Dakota State, receiving votes to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball national poll, raised their overall record to 12-5.
Both teams shot over 50 percent in the first twenty minutes of the game. The Bravehearts was 54.8 percent from the field (17-for-31), including 6-for-9 from the 3-point arc (66.7 percent). The Trojans were 22-for-41 (53.7 percent from the field and 4-for-12 from the 3-point line (33.3 percent).
OLC went to the free-throw line 17 times in the first-half and made 14 free-throws (82.4 percent). DSU converted two free-throws in four attempts (50 percent).
Dakota State shot a blistering 60.5 percent from the field (23-for-38) in the second-half to secure the victory. Oglala Lakota was 17-for-39 from the field (43.6 percent).
Yusuf Vinson recorded season highs of 34 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for the Trojans. He was 14-for-18 from the field and 4-for-5 at the free-throw line. Vinson earned eight offensive rebounds and nine defensive rebounds. Tyrone Gordon, Jr. added 24 points on his 10-for-14 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from the 3-point line. Luke Lamb had 12 points. Marcus Smith scored 11 points and earned seven boards.
John Lamb had nine points and dished out six assists for DSU. Gordon, Jr., Keith Lee II and Kevin Danielsen each added five assists. Smith recorded two blocked shots.
Duane Rooks had 26 points for the Bravehearts. Brice Hornbeck added 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds. He had four assists. Willis Zephier had 12 points and eight assists.
DSU shot 45-for-79 overall from the field (57 percent) compared to OLC 34-for-70 (48.6 percent). Both teams drained 13 3-pointers in the game.
The Bravehearts were 14-for-19 from the free-throw line (73.7 percent). The Trojans struggled with a 8-for-19 display at the free-throw line (42.1 percent).
Dakota State recorded 32 assists in the game.
The Trojans outrebounded Oglala Lakota 38-33.
Dakota State continues their action on the road this week. The Trojans visit their long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Wednesday night. Tip-off from the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. is set for 8 p.m.
