MAYVILLE, N.D. - Trailing as many as 15 points early in the second-half Saturday evening at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse, Dakota State men's basketball team rallied back for an 82-81 overtime thriller over Mayville State (N.D.) in the battle of Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference game.  The Trojans shot a sizzling 66.7 percent from the field in the second-half and overtime to defeat the Comets.

Dakota State, which received votes to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 national poll for the third straight week, raised their overall record to 8-2 and 1-0 in the A.I.I.  Mayville State dropped to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the A.I.I.

Mayville State kicked off the game by scoring six straight points to earn a 6-0 lead with seventeen minutes and 23 seconds in the first-half.

The Trojans ended their scoring drought with Cameron Krump's basket with 17:08 on the clock in the first-half. 

DSU earned their first lead of the game at 20-19 with less than 12 minutes before halftime.

The Comets closed the first-half with a 23-9 scoring run to earn a 42-29 intermission lead. 

MaSU shot 55.2 percent from the field (16-for-29) in the game's first twenty minutes, including 5-for-10 from the 3-point line.  DSU was 12-for-24 (50 percent) and 4-for-7 from the 3-point arc in the first-half.

Mayville State extended their lead to the largest margin of the game at 49-34 with 17 minutes left in the game.

Dakota State roared back with a 20-2 scoring run to regain their lead at 54-51 with less than 10 minutes remaining.

In the last 10 minutes of the game, both teams battle back-and-forth within four points.

After Terrell Newton nailed down two free-throws to give DSU a 72-69 lead with five seconds left in the game, the Comets forced overtime as Steve Ivory, Jr. made a 3-point shot to tie the game at 72-72 by the end of the regulation.

John Lamb scored the first four points of overtime period to give DSU a 76-72 lead with 2:20 left.

Mayville State trimmed their deficit to 80-78 with less than 10 seconds remaining in overtime.  John Lamb sealed the game by converting two free-throws with four seconds left to give DSU a 82-78 lead.  MaSU Austin Emerson hit a 3-pointer shot at the end of the buzzer as the Trojans held on to the victory.

Dakota State made 20 baskets in 30 attempts in second-half and overtime.  The Trojans were 10-for-13 from the free-throw line (76.9 percent).  Mayville State shot 45.2 percent (14-for-31) from the field and 6-for-10 from the free-throw line in the last 25 minutes of the game.

Yusuf Vinson scored 21 points off the bench for DSU.  He was 9-for-11 from the field and converted two free-throws.  Vinson pulled down seven rebounds.  John Lamb added 17 points from the bench, shooting 6-for-10 from the field and 3-for-5 at the free-throw line.  Newton scored 14 points and earned six boards.  Krump had 13 points and six rebounds. 

Tyrone Gordon, Jr. dished out a game-high six assists for Dakota State.  John Lamb had three steals. 

Ivory, Jr. recorded a double-double of 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Comets.  He was 13-for-20 from the field.  Mike Lindsay added 17 points.  Emerson and Sam Hyman each scored 14 points.  Emerson had five assists.

Dakota State shot 59.3 percent overall from the field (32-for-54) compared to MaSU 50 percent (30-fo-60).  The Comets drained 10 3-pointers in 25 attempts (40 percent), while DSU made 7 3-pointers in 14 attempts (50 percent).

Both teams made 11 free-throws in the game.

DSU outrebounded Mayville State 30-27.

The Trojans outscored the Comets 24-15 in points off turnovers, 30-12 inside the paint and 40-14 in bench points.

It was the second time this season that DSU had rallied back from a 15-point deficit in the early second-half for a road victory (last time it happened was at AIB on Nov. 27 in Des Moines, Iowa).  The Trojans are 2-0 in overtime games this season (defeated Morningside (Iowa) 76-73 at DSU Fieldhouse on Nov. 13).

Dakota State returns home for the first time in a month on Friday night.  The Trojans welcome the nationally-ranked Bellevue (Neb.), No. 19 in the latest NAIA Division II Men's Basketball national poll.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D.
