THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University men's basketball team (7-2 overall record) looks to bounce back in the winning column on Saturday.  The Trojans conclude their road stretch in nearly one month as they travel to Mayville, N.D.  DSU visits Mayville State (N.D.) (4-6) in an Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference game. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.

SIX-GAME WINNING STREAK SNAPPED:  Dakota State's six-game winning streak was snapped by No. 9 Northwestern (Iowa) on Dec. 8.  The Red Raiders outscored the Trojans 46-32 in the second-half to earn a 77-62 victory in Orange City, Iowa.  DSU's six-game winning streak was the third-longest winning streak in Trojan men's basketball record book.  Both Dakota State's losses were to the Red Raiders.  The Trojans had a 7-1 overall record before entering Saturday's game at Northwestern (Iowa), which was the best start since 1966-67 season (Trojans started the season with a 9-1 overall record).  

LAST MEETING:  Dakota State had won the last four meetings in the series with Mayville State (N.D.), including a season sweep last season.  DSU held the Comets to 30.5 percent shooting from the field in 81-61 victory in Mayville, N.D. on Nov. 5, 2011.  The Trojans shot a sizzling  73.9 percent shooting from the field (17-for-23) in the second-half to beat Mayville State 68-57 in Madison, S.D. on Dec. 3, 2011. 

TROJANS CONTINUE TO RECEIVE VOTES IN NATIONAL POLL:  Dakota State continues to receive votes to the NAIA's 'Top 25' Coaches' National Poll on Dec. 4.  The Trojans received six votes to the national poll.  The third edition of the national poll will be released tomorrow (Tuesday).

DSU FINISHES EXHIBITION GAME SCHEDULE:  The Trojans concluded their exhibition game schedule on Dec. 6.  Dakota State visited NCAA Division I South Dakota State at the Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.  The Trojans maintained lead in the first seven minutes and 31 seconds of the game.  The Trojans quickly scored its first five points of the game and extended their lead to 11-5 with 15:39 left in the first-half.  The Jackrabbits used a 17-1 scoring run to overtake the lead from DSU at 20-12 with less than 10 minutes before intermission.  SDSU won the game by the score of 83-52.

A.I.I. CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:  Dakota State will be playing a total of eight A.I.I. conference games this season.  The Trojans will be facing each team twice during the regular-season—Mayville State (N.D.), Jamestown (N.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.).  In addition, Dakota State will be playing in the Tip-off tournament (teams included DSU, MSU, JC and VCSU) held in Jamestown, N.D. on Jan. 19 and 20, which will be counted toward to their A.I.I. conference record.

DEFENSE STEPS UP:  According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Monday, Dakota State ranks eighth in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (26.5 percent).  The Trojans are 10th in the nation in field goal percentage (38.9 percent) and 15th in defensive rebounds per game (28.8).  Dakota State ranks 20th in scoring defense per game, allowing 63.6 points per game.  The Trojans rank 48th in blocked shots per game with an average of 3.0.

LAST TIME OUT:  Dakota State dropped two road games last week.  The Trojans lost an 83-52 exhibition game contest at NCAA Division I South Dakota State on Dec. 6.  Luke Lamb was perfect behind the 3-point line, going for 4-for-4 and earned 14 points in the game.  Yusuf Vinson added 11 points off the bench.  The Trojans suffered their second loss of the season to Northwestern (Iowa) on Dec. 8.  Dakota State had their biggest lead of the game at 21-15 with six minutes and 40 seconds left in the first-half.  The Red Raiders earned a 31-30 halftime lead.  With the game knotted at 34-34 with less than 18 minutes left in the game, NWIA used a 14-2 scoring run to earn a 48-36 lead.  DSU could get no closer than eight points (48-40 with 11:16 remaining), but the Red Raiders maintained their double digits throughout the game.  Marcus Smith had 17 points in the game.  Terrell Newton added 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds.  Mayville State went 1-1 last weekend.  The Comets lost at Minnesota-Morris by the score of 75-58 in Morris, Minn. on Dec. 7.  Mayville State bounced back in the winning column, defeating Oglala Lakota (S.D.) 100-80 in Kyle, S.D. on Dec. 9.   

DSU QUICK LEADERS:  Luke Lamb leads Dakota State's offense attack with 15.1 points per game.  He shoots 49.5 percent from the field.  Luke Lamb averages 1.7 steals per game.  Yusuf Vinson averages 8.0 rebounds per game (72 rebounds).  He is 42nd in total rebounds per game (8.0) and 42nd in defensive rebounds per game with an average of 5.4.  Terrell Newton leads the team in assists per game (3.9—47th in the nation) and blocks per game (0.7).  He is 18th in the nation in field goal percentage (59.3 percent).  John Lamb ranks 16th in the nation in 3-point field goal made per game (3.1) and 49th in assists per game (3.8).  Marcus Smith shoots 85.2 percent from the free-throw line, which is 19th-best in the nation.
