THIS WEEK: Dakota State (2-1 overall record) concludes their four-game home stand Tuesday night against Morningside (Iowa) (2-2, receiving votes in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' preseason poll). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse. On Thursday, the Trojans head to Ellendale, N.D. for a match-up with Trinity Bible (N.D.) (2-1). Game is set for 8 p.m. at the Ray Ulmer Fieldhouse. DSU play an exhibition game with NCAA Division II Northern State (S.D.) (1-2) on Friday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Wachs Arena.
DSU DEFEATS RIVAL DWU AT DSU FIELDHOUSE: Dakota State defeated Dakota Wesleyan 68-64 on Nov. 10 in a rivalry game at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans recorded their first victory against the Tigers on DSU's home court for the first time in nearly 10 years (last DSU's home win versus DWU was on Nov. 19, 2002). Dakota State had defeated DWU two straight times in the series meeting for the first time in many years.
LAST MEETING: Both Dakota State and Morningside split their two meetings last season, with each team winning on its home court. The Trojans won their third straight home victory versus the Mustangs in series meeting history with a 78-72 win on Nov. 11, 2011 as part of Ed Harter Classic. Morningside ended their five-game losing streak in the series meeting with DSU on Feb. 7, 2012. MC defeated the Trojans 69-62 in Sioux City, Iowa. Dakota State won both meetings with Trinity Bible (N.D.) last season (72-48 in Ellendale, N.D. on Nov. 19, 2011 and 84-55 at DSU Fieldhouse on Jan. 27, 2012). Northern State was tested by DSU in both teams' last meeting on Nov. 18, 2012. The Trojans jumped to a one-point halftime lead (41-40) before the Wolves used 44-36 second-half run to defeat DSU 84-77 in Trojans' exhibition game in Aberdeen, S.D.
TROJANS RANK NATIONALLY: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Monday, Dakota State ranks eight in the nation in assists per game (20.0 assists per game). The Trojans are ninth in assist/turnover ratio of 1.4 and plus-5.3 in turnover margin. DSU ranks 11th in the nation in scoring margin (+26.3) and 12th in scoring offense per game (89.3). The Trojans' defense allowed 37.6 percent from the field goal, which is 14th in the nation. Dakota State is 15th in free-throw percentage (74.7 percent) and 18th in offensive rebounds per game (14.7).
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State went 1-1 against a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) members last week. The Trojans dropped a 78-70 contest to No. 7 Northwestern (Iowa) on Nov. 7. DSU bounced back in the winning column on Nov. 10 with a 68-64 win over long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan, recording their first home win against DWU for the first time in nearly 10 years. Morningside, which they are in the middle of six-game stretch on the road, went 1-1 in their Kansas trip last weekend. The Mustangs upset No. 18 McPherson (Kan.) 87-61 on Nov. 9, but dropped a 73-53 decision to Friends (Kan.) on Nov. 10. Trinity Bible (N.D.) recorded their first loss of the season on Nov. 9 at Turtle Mountain Community College by the score of 93-83. Northern State went 1-2 in the Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, Calif. The Wolves lost to UNC-Pembroke 73-58 on Nov. 9 and 75-61 to Grand Canyon on Nov. 10. NSU recorded their first win of the season on Nov. 11 over Cal State Dominguez Hills by the score of 69-67.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Luke Lamb leads Dakota State in three different categories. He averages 19.3 points (32nd in the nation), 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game for the Trojans. He shoots 52.4 percent from the field. Luke Lamb ranks fifth in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (4.7). Keith Lee II records 13 assists (4.3 assists per game), which is 43rd in the nation. Yusuf Vinson leads the team with two blocked shots (0.7 blocks per game). He is 18th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (3.7). Terrell Newton is 10th in the nation in field goal percentage (68 percent). John Lamb ranks 19th in 3-point field goals made per game (3.3). Marcus Smith records 88.9 free-throw percentage, which ranks him 25th in the nation.
