THIS WEEK: Dakota State (1-0 overall record) continues their four-game men's basketball home stand with a pair of games this week against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). The Trojans entertain Northwestern (Iowa) (1-1, No. 7 in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' preseason poll) on Wednesday night in the annual 'White-Out' game. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse. On Saturday, DSU welcomes their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan (2-0) with a tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
ANNUAL "WHITE-OUT" GAME VERSUS NORTHWESTERN (IOWA): The annual 'White-Out' game, hosted by DSU's Physical Education and Coaching Club, will be held on Wednesday night versus Northwestern (Iowa). Wear your 'white' t-shirt to the game to support the annual 'White-Out' game. Northwestern is ranked No. 7 in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' preseason national poll. The Red Raiders won the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tournament champions last season and qualified to the NAIA 'Sweet Sixteen' round at the national tournament.
2011-12 DSU MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP BANNER: The Dakota State University Athletics Department will be recognizing the 2011-12 DSU men's basketball team prior to the men's basketball game on Wednesday night. They will be recognized with a championship banner to be hanged up in the DSU Fieldhouse gym. The Trojans captured their first-ever Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Division II Men's Basketball Tournament Champions and qualified to the NAIA national tournament for the first time since 1992. In addition, Dakota State recorded their most wins (18-13 overall record) for the first time since 1992 and recorded their back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in more than 20 years.
BATTLE OF NAIA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT QUALIFERS: Both Dakota State and Northwestern (Iowa) qualified for the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament last season in Point Lookout, Mo. The Trojans dropped a 69-63 overtime contest to No. 5 McPherson (Kan.) in the NAIA's first round. NWIA defeated Tennessee Wesleyan 95-69 in the first round of the NAIA Tournament, before dropping a 83-74 decision to Northwest (Wash.) in the NAIA 'Sweet Sixteen.'
LAST MEETING: Northwestern won the last meeting with the Trojans in a double overtime thriller at DSU Fieldhouse on Nov. 8, 2011. The Red Raiders erased a 10-point deficit midway in the second-half and outscored the Trojans 16-7 in the second overtime to earn a 99-90 victory. Dakota State and Dakota Wesleyan split their two meetings last season with each team winning on the road. The Trojans' second-half surge in the first meeting with DWU at DSU Fieldhouse on Nov. 15, 2011 fell short as the Tigers held on to a 70-69 win. Dakota State ended their 12-game losing streak in the series with DWU with a 78-73 victory at the Corn Palace on Dec. 19, 2011. The Trojans' last win versus DWU at DSU Fieldhouse was on Nov. 19, 2002 by the score of 92-85.
TROJANS SET SCORING RECORDS: Since the arrival of DSU's head men's basketball coach Gary Garner, the Trojans extended their winning streak in season opener game to four straight wins on Nov. 1. Dakota State set several records in Trojans' 130-47 victory over Oglala Lakota (S.D.). The Trojans broke the new DSU school record for most points in a single game with the previous old mark set in 1991-92 seasonâ€”123 points versus Martin Luther (Minn.). In addition, the Trojans broke a new school record for the largest margin of victory with 83 pointsâ€”previous old mark was 57 points in a victory versus Mount Scenario (Wis.) during the 2001-02 season.
TRIPLE-DOUBLE: John Lamb recorded a triple-double in Trojans' 130-47 victory over Oglala Lakota (S.D.) on Nov. 1 at DSU Fieldhouse. He scored 16 points on his 5-for-10 from the field, including 4-for-9 from the 3-point arc. He was 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. Lamb grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out 10 assists.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Terrell Newton leads DSU with 27.0 points per game and shoots 90.9 percent from the field this season (ranks second in the nation in field goal percentage). He leads the team with three steals, Yusuf Vinson leads the team with 16 rebounds per game (ranks second in the nation in total rebounds per game). Vinson and Luke Lamb each rank first in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (8.0). John Lamb averages 10 assists per game, which is second in the nation. Ryan McCuthcheon and Newton each had a blocked shot for the Trojans.
