THIS WEEK: Dakota State (13-9 overall record) attempts to remain undefeated in their current five-game home stand with a pair of games this week at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans welcome two in-state teams, hosting Mount Marty (10-12, 6-9 in the Great Plains Athletic conference) on Tuesday night and University of Sioux Falls (12-7) on Saturday night. Tuesday's tip-off is slated to start at 8 p.m. as part of DSU Faculty/Staff Appreciation night. The game starting time on Saturday night is set for 7:30 p.m. as part of DSU's advertising sponsorships recognition night.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State had won its last three meetings in the series with Mount Marty. The last time both teams met was on Jan. 29, 2011 in Yankton, S.D. where the Trojans came on top by the score of 69-59. The last time Mount Marty and DSU met at DSU Fieldhouse was on Jan. 30, 2010 as DSU defeated the Lancers 59-58 where the Trojans made a 3-pointer shot as time expired. University of Sioux Falls won the first meeting from Dakota State 83-57 on Jan. 17 at the Stewart Center. The Cougars shot a sizzling 63.6 percent from the field compared to the Trojans' 35.3 percent. DSU won the last meeting with USF held at the DSU Fieldhouse as part of the Ed Harter Classic on Nov. 14, 2010. The Trojans raced to a 43-24 halftime lead and defeated the Cougars 76-56.
LAST TIME OUT: DSU played its only game last week on Jan. 27. The Trojans remained undefeated in the current five-game home stand with a 84-55 win over Trinity Bible (N.D.). Mount Marty split a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference last week at the Cimpl Arena in Yankton, S.D. The Lancers dropped a 68-61 overtime decision to Dakota Wesleyan on Jan. 25, but bounced back on Jan. 28 to defeat Nebraska Wesleyan 63-56. University of Sioux Falls extended their season-high winning streak to nine games with a road sweep at Minot State last weekend (70-60 on Jan. 27 and 73-59 on Jan. 28) in the battle of NCAA Division II transitional members and future members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
BALANCE OFFENSE ATTACK: The Trojans are averaging 82.7 points per game in the current five-game home stand at DSU Fieldhouse. Dakota State had all players scored in an 84-55 win over Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Jan. 27. DSU is allowing 64.7 points per game during the current home stretch.
HOME COOKING: Dakota State improved their home record to 7-5 after the victory on Jan. 27. The Trojans had won its last three games at home.
FOR THE RECORDS: Dakota State is 3-3 against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference this season. The Trojans split with Dakota Wesleyan and defeated then-No. 23 Morningside and Midland. DSU lost to then-No. 7 Northwestern (Iowa) in double overtime and then-No. 2 Dordt (Iowa). Mount Marty will be facing their first opponent from the former Dakota Athletic Conference this season. University of Sioux Falls is undefeated in seven games versus former DAC teams (swept Valley City State and Minot State and defeated DSU, Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines).
HISTORY LESSON: The Trojans recorded its double-digit wins for their third straight seasons (13 wins this season, 15 in 2010-11 and 11 in 2009-10) for the first time since the late 1980's and early 1990's. Dakota State recorded six straight seasons of double-digits wins, starting in 1988-89 (10 wins). The Trojans had 17 wins in 1989-90, 20 in 1990-91, 19 in 1991-92, 14 in 1992-93 and 1993-94.
DSU RANKS NATIONALLY: According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Monday, Jan. 30, Dakota State ranks 36th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (42.8 percent), 38th in total rebound margin (+3.4) and 39th in field goal percentage (45.8 percent). The Trojans are 40th in the nation in total assists (325), 40th in offensive rebounds per game (12.1) and 41st in scoring defense per game (69.1 points per game).
QUICK LEADERS: Jesse Bean leads the team in scoring with an average of 14.1 points per game. He shoots 46.6 percent from the field. Bean averages 2.7 assists (57 total). Keith Biggers records 118 rebounds (6.2 average) for the Trojans. He ranks 28th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (2.9). Donald Stewart leads the team in steals with 25 (1.1 average). Spencer Adams records ten blocked shots this season (0.5 average).
