AURORA, Neb. - The Dakota State University baseball team split their four-game series with Hastings (Neb.) on March 16 and 17 at the Mitchell Field.  The series were originally scheduled to play in Hastings, but wet field conditions forced to move the four-game series in Aurora.  After dropping the first game of the series 13-4, DSU won two straight games in the series (8-0 and 7-2) before losing in the final game of the series 6-5.

Dakota State's overall record now stands at 5-13.  Hastings is 4-13 overall record.

Game 1 - Hastings (Neb.) 13, Dakota State (S.D.) 4 - BOX SCORE

Both teams were able to score one run in the first inning as the game was tied at 1-1.

The Broncos exploded for a pair of five runs in the second and third innings to build an 11-1 lead by the end of the third frame.

DSU ended their scoring drought as they scored three times in the top of the fifth inning to cut HC's lead to 11-4.  The Broncos added two runs in the bottom half to extend their lead to 13-4.

Anyelo Roman went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs so for Dakota State.  Ryan Bourcier added two singles, an RBI and a run scored.  Danny Flahie and Chaz Palmer each had a double.  Kyle Holland hit a single and recorded two runs scored.  Kevin Madera and Kyle Braun each had a hit. 

John LaMaster produced two hits, two RBIs and scored three times for the Broncos.  Tanner Santarelli had two singles.  Tyler DeLaFuente recorded a single and two RBIs.  Brent Hermanussen and Connor Thomas each had a single.  Drew Clark had two RBIs.

The Trojans outhit Hastings 9-8.

DSU had nine runners left on base.  The Broncos left 10 runners on base.

Michael Crain (1-1) took the loss on the pitching mound for Dakota State.  He tossed 1 2/3 innings and allowed six runs (five unearned) on two hits.  Luke Gassman pitched 1/3 innings in relief and gave up five runs on two hits.  Josh Grissom worked for four innings and allowed two runs on four hits.  He recorded three strikeouts.

Jeremy Williams (1-2) notched the win for the Broncos.  He pitched five innings and gave up four runs (one unearned) on seven hits.  Nate Story tossed the final two innings in relief and limited DSU to two hits.

Game 2 - Dakota State (S.D.) 8, Hastings (Neb.) 0 - BOX SCORE

Josh Caven shut down the Broncos in the second game of the doubleheader on March 16.  Every Trojan player had a least one hit in the game, where DSU outhit the Broncos 13-3.  DSU ended their nine-game losing streak with an 8-0 victory over the Broncos.

The Trojans jumped to a 2-0 early lead in the opening inning.  DSU added a run in the top third inning to extend their lead to 3-0.

Dakota State produced three runs in the top fourth frame to build a 6-0 lead.

DSU added a run in the top fifth and seventh innings to seal the victory.

Anyelo Roman recorded his 19th career home run at Dakota State, which is the most career home runs in DSU Baseball record book (previously set by Shea Tonkin with 18 home runs from 2005-2007). 

Braun had three hits and produced two RBIs in the game for DSU.  Bourcier added two doubles and two RBIs.  Flahie had a double.  Rays Roman recorded two singles and scored twice.  Holland,, Madera, Palmer and Nathan Wieneke each had a hit.

Rays and Anyelo Roman each swiped one base.

Clark, Micah Lockerby and Ben Reimer each had a single for Hastings. 

The Broncos committed four errors in the game, while the Trojans committed one error.

DSU's Caven tossed a complete game for his first victory of the season.  He struck out five HC's batters in seven innings of work.

Kyle Stromer suffered his first loss of the season for the Broncos.  He pitched three innings and allowed three runs on seven hits.  Christian Schneider worked two innings in relief and gave up four runs (three unearned) on four hits.  Eric Anttila pitched a shutout sixth inning.  Ryan Gardner worked the seventh inning and allowed one run on two hits. 

Game 3 - Dakota State (S.D.) 7, Hastings (Neb.) 2 - BOX SCORE

Dakota State recorded their second straight victory as the Trojans defeated Hastings 7-2 in the first game of the doubleheader on March 17.

The Broncos earned a 1-0 early lead in the opening inning.

DSU scored three times in the top third frame to grab a 3-1 lead over Hastings.

The Trojans added two runs in the top fourth inning to extend their lead to 5-1. 

Hastings had a run in the bottom sixth inning to trim DSU's lead to 5-2. 

Dakota State added two runs in the final inning to seal the victory.

Anyelo Roman produced two hits and three RBIs for the Trojans.  Madera added a double and scored twice.  Flahie and Palmer each had a hit and a run.  Braun and Wieneke each had an RBI.

DeLaFuente recorded two hits for the Broncos.  Hermanussen added a double.  Trenton Neill had two singles.  LaMaster had a hit.

Hastings left eight runners on base.  DSU had three runners left on base.

Austin Weber (2-2) tossed a complete game victory for the Trojans.  He limited Hastings to two runs (one unearned) on six hits.  Weber recorded four strikeouts.

AJ Fruchtl (0-2) recorded the loss for the Broncos.  He gave up seven runs (three unearned) on five hits.  Fruchtl struck out 10 DSU's batters.

Game 4 - Hastings (Neb.) 6, Dakota State (S.D.) 5 - BOX SCORE

The Trojans could not hold their lead in the game as the Broncos rallied late in the game for the victory in the final game of the four-game series.

HC earned a 2-0 lead in the opening inning. 

The Trojans exploded for four runs in the top third frame to earn a 4-2 lead.

Dakota State added a run in the top fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-2.  Hastings scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to cut Trojans' lead to 5-4.

The Broncos mounted a rally in the bottom sixth frame with two runs scored to take a 6-5 lead over DSU.

Dakota State was unable to score in the final inning as the Broncos secured the victory.

Palmer had a double and three RBIs for Dakota State.  Andy Lee was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 and scored once.  Anyelo Roman added a single and an RBI.  Flahie had a double.

LaMaster recorded a double and two RBIs for Hastings.  Clark added a double and an RBI.  Neill had two singles.  Thomas, DeLaFuente, Jake Steese and Cregihton Leif each had a hit.

The Broncos outhit the Trojans 8-5.

DSU left six runners on base.  Hastings had five runners left on base.

Seth Rockafellow started the game for Dakota State.  He worked the first 4 1/3 innings and allowed four runs (two unearned) on five hits.  Drew Sweeter (0-1) took the loss on the mound as he worked for 2/3 innings in relief.  He gave up two runs on three hits.  Anyelo Roman pitched one shutout inning in relief.

Patrick Williamson pitched the first three innings for the Broncos.  He allowed four runs (three unearned) on two hits.  LaMaster (3-1) recorded the victory as he pitched three innings and gave up one run on two hits.  Addison Ives tossed a one-hit seventh inning to earn his first save of the season.

Dakota State was scheduled to play their home opener on Thursday versus in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan, but with the recent snowstorm and wet field conditions, the Trojans' season home opener will have to wait.

DSU continues their road action this weekend as they visit Concordia (Neb.) in a four-game series.  The doubleheader kicks off on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 12 p.m. on Sunday in Seward, Neb.
