THIS WEEK: Dakota State (5-4 overall record) men's basketball team will attempt to bounce back in the winning column with a pair of games this week. The Trojans travel to AIB (Iowa) for the first-ever meeting in team history on Wednesday night. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the AIB Activities Center in Des Moines, Iowa. DSU returns home on Saturday night for a second meeting with former Dakota Athletic Conference rival Mayville State (5-4). The starting game time is set for 8 p.m. or approximately 25 minutes after the completion of the women's game at DSU Fieldhouse.
LAST MEETING: DSU will meet AIB, a member of Midwest Collegiate Conference, for the first time in team history Wednesday night. The Eagles are in their first year of men's basketball program in school history. AIB is located in Des Moines, Iowa. Dakota State limited Mayville State to 30.5 percent from the field in DSU's 81-61 first meeting win on Nov. 5, 2010 at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville, N.D. The Trojans went to gain a 34-26 halftime lead and outscored the Comets 47-35 in the second-half. DSU had won the last three meetings with Mayville State.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State faced NCAA-No. 16 Augustana (S.D.) in an exhibition game on Nov. 22. The Trojans jumped to an 11-0 opening lead, but a strong late surge by the Vikings helped defeat DSU 83-69. The Trojans split a pair of games with members of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference at the Hampton Inn Classic last weekend. DSU defeated York (Neb.) 79-69 on Nov. 25, but suffered an 85-65 setback to nationally-ranked host-team Bellevue (Neb.). AIB lost three games last weekâ€”at Graceland (Iowa) 83-76 and a pair of games at the Hampton Inn Classic (Bellevue 97-44 and York 100-67). Mayville State have not played a regular-season game since 93-59 win over Trinity Bible (N.D.) on No. 15. The Comets suffered a pair of exhibition losses to NCAA Division II Minnesota State-Moorhead 71-45 on Nov. 19 and at Northern State 88-50 on Nov. 26.
TOUGH SCHEDULE: The Trojans faced a tough schedule in the month of November. DSU had faced three teams that are ranked in the national preseason poll. The Trojans suffered a double overtime loss to Northwestern (Iowa) (preseason-No. 7, currently No. 8 in the first national regular-season poll) 99-90, defeated Morningside (preseason-No. 23, currently No. 16) 78-72 and suffered an 85-65 loss to Bellevue (Neb.) (preseason-No. 4, currently No. 11).
TROJAN REBOUNDING: Dakota State ranks in the top 30 in the nation in rebounding categories, according to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Tuesday. The Trojans ranks 13th in the nation in total rebounds per game (42.4) and 18th in defensive rebounds per game (28.1) and offensive rebounds per game (14.3). DSU is 30th in the nation in total rebound margin (+5.9).
NATIONAL RANKINGS: The Trojans are 14th in the nation in total assists (149), 17th in field goal percentage defense (40.3) and 30th in total scoring offense (692).
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Jesse Bean leads DSU in scoring with an average of 12.0 points per game. He ranks 16th in the nation in free-throw percentage (86.2 percent). Keith Biggers records 58 rebounds (6.4 average) for the Trojans. Yusef Gray leads the team in total assists (24) and steals (9). Cameron Krump averages 0.7 blocks per game.
