CLAREMORE, Okla. - Dakota State jumped to a 1-0 lead Sunday afternoon in a single baseball game with Ottawa (Kan.) at the Diamond Sports Complex. The Braves exploded for six runs in the bottom third inning to defeat the Trojans 7-1.
DSU lost their third straight game and dropped their overall record to 3-7. Ottawa, a member of Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), raised their record to 3-3.
The Trojans earned the first lead of the game in the top second frame. Kevin Madera reached on base by a walk with one out. He advanced to second base after a wild pitch by OU's Jake Kolenda. Chaz Palmer hit a ground out and advanced Madera to third base. Seth Spears hit an RBI single to score Madera to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
Greg Wisner hit a 2-RBI single in the bottom third inning to earn a 2-1 lead for Ottawa. Jacob Loucks added an RBI single to make it 3-1 in favor of OU. Kyle Pener hit an RBI single and the Braves added a run caused by DSU's defensive error to extend their lead to 5-1. Cole Horn recorded an RBI single to expand Ottawa's lead to 6-1. The Braves recorded three hits in the bottom third frame, while DSU's defense committed two errors in the same frame.
Horn hit an RBI single in the bottom fifth inning to widen Braves' lead to 7-1.
The Trojans were unable to score in the final inning as Ottawa ended the game by a double play.
Rays Roman was 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles and a walk for Dakota State. He swiped one base. Spears had a single and an RBI. Palmer added a single. Madera had a run scored and a walk.
Loucks and Pener each had two singles and an RBI for the Braves. Wisner recorded a single and two RBIs. Kaylem Quinn had a double. Dustin Balmer and Corn each had a hit. Corn produced two RBIs.
Ottawa outhit the Trojans 8-4. DSU committed three errors in the game compared to OU's one error.
Austin Weber (1-1) took the loss for the Trojans on the pitching mound. He tossed 2 2/3 innings and allowed six runs (five unearned) on five fits. Josh Caven worked 2 1/3 innings in relief and gave up a run on two hits. He recorded two strikeouts. J.D. Farley pitched the sixth inning and allowed a hit.
Jake Kolenda (2-0) picked up the victory for Ottawa. He pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up a run on four hits. Tyler Wilson worked 1 1/3 innings in relief.
Dakota State heads to Kentucky for their week-long stay. The Trojans' first stop will be in Owensboro, Ky. DSU will play Saint Catherine's (Ky.) at 1:30 p.m., followed by host-team Bresica (Ky.) at 4 p.m. Both games will be at the Kamuf Park.
