LEAVENWORTH, Kan. - Dakota State produced a pair of two-run innings in the first game Sunday versus Saint Mary (Kan.) at Kehoe Memorial Baseball Field and held on to a 4-3 victory. The Trojans' late rally in the second game of the doubleheader fell short as the Spires recorded a 3-1 win to earn a split.
Dakota State's overall record stands at 1-3. Saint Mary, a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), improved to 2-4 after the second game victory.
Game 1 - Dakota State (S.D.) 4, Saint Mary (Kan.) 3
The Spires scored the first run of the game in the bottom first inning. With a runner on third base with two outs, Joe Haak hit an RBI single to score Matt Corigliano to give USM a 1-0 lead.
Dakota State broke their scoreless innings in the top fourth frame with two runs scored. Anyelo Roman opened the inning with a single. Kevin Madera recorded a walk and advanced Anyelo Roman to second base. Ryan Bourcier hit an RBI single to score Anyelo Roman to tie the game at 1-1. After Danny Flahie's sacrifice hit to advance Madera to third base and Bourcier to second base, Kyle Braun hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Bourcier as the Trojans gained a 2-1 lead.
DSU added two runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead. Corey Pasichnyk reached on base by a single. Chaz Palmer walked and advanced Pasichnyk to second base. Rays Roman was hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans. After the Spires produced a double play (Pasichnyk out at home and Kyle Holland out at first base), Anyelo Roman hit a 2-RBI single to score Palmer and Rays Roman to widen DSU's lead to 4-1.
Corigliano hit an RBI single in the bottom fifth inning to cut Trojans' lead to 4-2.
USM added a run in the bottom sixth frame caused by DSU's defensive error. DSU's lead was reduced to one run at 4-3.
Dakota State ended the game with a double play by Braun, Nathan Wienke and Madera and secured their first win of the season.
Anyelo Roman was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three singles and two RBIs. Bourcier added two singles and an RBI. Pasichnyk and Holland each had a hit. Braun recorded an RBI. Rays Roman, Anyelo Roman, Madera and Palmer each had a run.
Corigliano recorded two hits and an RBI in the game for Saint Mary. Trevor Matifes had a double. Haak had a single and an RBI. Travis Quick, Kevin Joyce, Arnold and Ferracuti Michael each had a hit.
The Spires outhit the Trojans 8-7 in the game. DSU committed three errors.
USM left seven runners on bases while the Trojans had three runners left on base.
Austin Weber recorded his first pitching victory for Dakota State. He tossed five innings and allowed two runs on six hits. Weber struck out six Spires' batters. Anyelo Roman pitched the final two innings of the game to earn his first save of the season. He gave up one unearned run on two hits.
Stephen Malisa took the loss on the mount for Saint Mary. He worked the first four innings of the game and allowed four runs on five hits. Malisa recorded five strikeouts. Ray Osuna pitched three innings in relief. He limited DSU to two hits.
Game 2 - Saint Mary (Kan.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1
After three-and-half scoreless innings, Saint Mary produced two runs in the bottom fourth inning to earn a 2-0 lead. With two runners on bases and two outs, Parker Clough hit a 2-RBI single to score Jackson Perri and Andrew Clark to give Spires a two-run lead.
Joyce hit an RBI triple with one out in the bottom sixth frame to extend USM's lead to 3-0.
Flahie opened the top seventh inning with a walk for the Trojans. With one out, Rays Roman hit a double and advanced Flahie to third base. Holland recorded an RBI single to score Flahie to trim USM's lead to 3-1 (Rays Roman advanced to third base). DSU could not convert their scoring opportunity as they left two runners on base when game ended.
Holland went 2-for-4 at the plate for DSU. He had a double, a single and recorded an RBI. Bourcier, Pasichnyk and Palmer each had single.
Clough had two singles and two RBIs for Saint Mary. Joyce had a triple and an RBI. Clark had two singles. Nolan Almodovar, Dominic Ferrando and Arnold each had a hit.
USM had eight hits in the game compared to the Trojans six hits.
DSU left nine runners on base. The Spires had seven runners left on base.
Jordan Sovich (0-1) recorded the loss for Dakota State. He pitched four innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Michael Crain worked for two innings in relief. He gave up an unearned run on three hits.
Cade Brummer tossed a complete victory for USM. He limited the Trojans to one run and six hits. Brummer recorded seven strikeouts.
Dakota State and Saint Mary concludes their four-game series Monday with a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Kehoe Memorial Baseball Field in Leavenworth, Kan.
