THIS WEEK: Dakota State (0-2 overall record) continues their action on the road this weekend. The Trojans travel to Leavenworth, Kan. to play a four-game series with Saint Mary (Kan.) (1-3). Doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The four-game series will be played at the Kehoe Memorial Baseball Field.
TROJANS KICK OFF LONG ROAD STRETCH: The Trojans began their longest road stretch to start the 2013 season with a doubleheader loss at Midland (Neb.) on Feb. 13. The Warriors swept DSU by the scores of 8-2 and 7-0 in Fremont, Neb. Dakota State will be playing 25 straight games on the road to start the 2013 campaign, which includes trips to Nebraska, Kansas and Kentucky. Dakota State returns home at Flynn Field on March 21 against long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State dropped a pair of games to Midland (Neb.) on Feb. 13. The Warriors produced a 4-run third inning in first and second games to defeat DSU 8-2 and 7-0. Rays Roman and Ryan Bourcier each had a solo home run in the first game. Saint Mary (Kan.) suffered three straight losses to Science & Arts (Okla.) 5-1, 6-3 and 2-1 on Feb. 8 and 9. The Spires took the last game of the four-game series with a 5-4 victory in Chickasha, Okla.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State won the last meeting with Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kan. on Feb. 24, 2012. The Spires opened with a 2-0 lead. The Trojans exploded for four runs in the top of the second inning to earn a 4-2 lead. Saint Mary answered back with four runs in the bottom second frame to regain their lead at 6-4. In the top of the sixth inning, DSU recorded three runs to overtake the lead from the Spires and held on to a 7-6 victory.
ABOUT SAINT MARY: Saint Mary is a member of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (including Tabor, Sterling, Kansas Wesleyan, Ottawa, Bethany, Friends and McPherson). The Spires were 21-24 overall record and 13-11 KCAC conference record. Saint Mary was fourth in the conference and defeated Ottawa (Kan.) in the first round of 2012 KCAC Baseball postseason Tournament. The Spires dropped a pair of games to end their season in the conference tournament. Rob Miller is in his 12th season as Saint Mary baseball head coach.
DSU RANKS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Thursday, Dakota State ranks fourth in the nation in home runs per game (1.0). The Trojans are 46th in the nation in fielding percentage (0.962).
TROJAN BASEBALL INDIVIDUAL NATIONAL RANKINGS: DSU have eight playersâ€”Chaz Palmer, Ryan Bourcier, Drew Sweeter, Anyelo Roman, Kyle Holland, Rays Roman, Kevin Madera and Danny Flahieâ€”rank first in the nation in fielding percentage after Wednesday's doubleheader. Mike Chartier tops in the nation in total walks allowed (0) and walks allowed per game (0.0). Madera records five strikeouts and ranks sixth in the nation in batters struck out per 9 inning (15.0). Ryan Boucier and Rays Roman ranks fourth in home runs per game (0.5). Bourcier is 20th in the nation in slugging percentage of .800. Rays Roman averages 2.5 total bases per game, which is 30th best in the nation. He is 49th in the nation in slugging percentage (.714).
IT'S GONE: Ryan Bourcier and Rays Roman each hit a solo home run in Trojans' 8-2 game one loss to Midland (Neb.) on Feb. 13. Bourcier recorded his ninth career home run at Dakota State and is tied for fourth-most career home run in DSU Baseball record book. Rays Roman hit his third career home run at DSU (recorded two home runs in 2012).
PREPARING FOR KENTUCKY: Dakota State is scheduled to play 11 games in the state of Kentucky for a span of one week. The Trojans will play against Asbury, Kentucky State, Saint Catherine, Brescia, Lindsey Wilson and Campbellsville during Trojans' stay in Kentucky from March 2-9.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Rays Roman leads the Trojans with two hits. He hit .286 in the first two games of the season. Ryan Bourcier and Rays Roman each record one RBI. Kevin Madera struck out five batters in his first pitching appearance (which is 15.0 strikeouts per nine innings). Drew Sweeter leads the team with 9.00 earned runs average (3 earned runs).
