MITCHELL, S.D. - Dakota State jumped to a six-run lead in the first game of the softball doubleheader with in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan Thursday afternoon at McWhirter Field. The Trojans fell short by the score of 11-10. The Tigers won the second game 14-3 in five innings to earn a doubleheader sweep over DSU.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 8-12. Dakota Wesleyan, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, won their fourth straight game to improve their overall record to 4-14.
Both teams are scheduled to meet again for another doubleheader on Wednesday at Thue Softball Complex.
Game 1 - Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 11, Dakota State (S.D.) 10 - BOX SCORE
After three scoreless innings, Dakota State scored its first run of the game in the top fourth inning. Elizabeth Rubalcava hit a single with one out. Samantha Deen recorded an RBI double to score Rubalcava to give DSU their first lead of the game at 1-0.
The Trojans scored five times in the top fifth frame. Bretton Lien hit a double with one out. Chelsey John got on base by DWU's defensive error and advanced Lien to third base. Aubrey Lorenz hit a single to score Lien to make it 2-0 in favor of DSU. The Trojans added two runs from John and Lorenz due to Tigers' defensive miscue. DSU scored a run by DWU's passed ball, followed by Brittany Hill's RBI single to extend Trojans' lead to 6-0.
Dakota Wesleyan racked up a total of 10 runs in the bottom fifth inning to gain a 10-6 lead. The Tigers opened the inning with seven straight batters reaching safely on base - including three walks. DWU recorded six hits in the bottom fifth frame.
DSU answered back with four runs in the top half of the sixth inning to tie the game. Lien reached on base by a walk with one out. A passed ball by DWU's Hailey Unger advanced Lien to second base. John and Lorenz each recorded a walk to set up a bases loaded and one out situation for the Trojans. Renaye Gamson hit an RBI single to score Lien to trim DWU's lead to 10-7. Rubalcava recorded a 3-RBI triple to score John, Lorenz and Gamson to tie the game at 10-10.
The Trojans held DWU scoreless in the bottom sixth inning as the Tigers left three runners on base.
Dakota State did not score in the top seventh inning as they went three-and-out.
Katie Uttecht hit a single to open the bottom seventh frame for the Tigers. A passed ball by DSU advanced Uttecht to second base. Vanessa Mendez hit a ground out for the first out of the bottom seventh inning. Kelsey Newman hit a game-winning RBI double to score Uttecht as DWU secured the victory.
Rubalcava was 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple, two singles and recorded three RBIs for the Trojans. Lien, Deen and Brittany Hill each added a double. Katie Silbowski had two hits. Gamson had a single and two RBIs. Lorenz, Gamson, Rubalcava, Lien and John each scored twice. John swiped one base.
Uttecht recorded three hits - a double and two singles - with two RBIs for the Tigers. Mendez had a triple and two RBIs. Lindy Snook had a double. Newoman and Katie Anderus each recorded two RBIs.
DWU outhit DSU 11-10.
The Tigers left eight runners on base. The Trojans had four runners left on base.
Silbowski started the game for DSU. She pitched four innings and allowed six runs on five hits. Silbowski recorded six strikeouts. Deen worked 1 1/3 innings in relief and gave up four unearned runs on four hits. Lori Harshbarger recorded the loss for DSU as she pitched 2/3 innings. She gave up one run on two hits.
Uttecht worked the first 4 1/3 innings for the Tigers. She allowed six runs (four unearned) on seven hits. Dickson (2-8) picked up the victory as she pitched 2 2/3 innings. She gave up four runs on three hits.
Game 2 - Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 14, Dakota State (S.D.) 3 (5 innings) - BOX SCORE
DSU earned the first lead of the game in the opening inning. Lorenz reached on base by a walk. She advanced to second after Gamson's sacrifice bunt. Rubalcava was hit-by-pitch. Lorenz was caught stealing at third base while Rubalcava swiped one base. Brittany Hill hit an RBI single to score Rubalcava to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
DWU responded with four runs in the bottom first frame. After Mendez's ground-out, the Tigers recorded three consecutive singles by Laura Erickson, Anderus and Unger to set up a bases loaded situation. With two outs, Kelsey Newman hit an RBI single to score Erickson to tie the game at 1-1. Bailey Gummer added a 3-RBI double to score Anderus, Unger and Newman as DWU's lead grew to 4-1.
Devinne Facile hit a 2-RBI single in the bottom third inning to expand DWU's lead to 6-1. Uttecht added an RBI single to make it 7-1 in favor of DWU, completing a three-run third inning.
Dakota Wesleyan scored seven times in the bottom fourth frame to expand their lead to 14-1.
DSU added two runs in the fifth inning. Gamson opened with a single. Rubalcava hit an RBI triple to score Gamson to cut their deficit to 14-2. Brittany Hill added an RBI single to score Rubalcava. The Trojans left two runners on base as DWU ended the game due to mercy rule.
Brittany Hill was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three singles and produced two RBIs for DSU. Gamson added two singles. Rubalcava had a double and an RBI. She recorded one stolen base. Silbowski and Lien each had a hit.
Gummer had a double, a single and recorded five RBIs for DWU. Erickson had three singles. Anderus, Unger, Facile and Uttecht each had two singles. Mendez, Newman and Facile each recorded two RBIs.
The Tigers outhit the Trojans 16-8.
DSU committed four defensive errors in the game.
Harshbarger (0-2) recorded the loss for the Trojans. She pitched 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Shai-Lee Hill worked for three innings in relief and gave up ten unearned runs on 11 hits. Silbowski tossed the last out in the bottom fourth inning.
Dickson allowed one run on one hit in the first inning for the Tigers. Tiffany Sharp (2-4) picked up the victory as she pitched the final four innings. She gave up two runs on seven hits.
Dakota State returns home Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader with Presentation (S.D.). The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. at the Thue Softball Complex in Madison, S.D.
