SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Dakota State University visited their in-state rival University of Sioux Falls in a softball doubleheader at Harmodon Park Tuesday evening. The Cougars defeated the Trojans 8-0 in the first game. DSU held their lead in the second game, but USF rallied back with two runs scored in the final inning to earn a 6-5 comeback victory over the Trojans.
It was the final regular-season collegiate softball games for two DSU's seniors - Leslie Neiman and Alisa Balesteri.
Game 1 - University of Sioux Falls 8, Dakota State 0
After three scoreless innings in the first game of the doubleheader, USF exploded for six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to earn a 6-0 lead.
The Cougars made it 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning by Kellen Dewey's RBI single. Noelle Roden added an RBI single to score Dewey as USF ended the game due to mercy rule.
USF outhit the Trojans 12-2 in the game.
Taylor Mackey and Balesteri each had a single for DSU.
Roden was 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs for the Cougars. Jenna Turner added three singles. Dewey had two hits and two RBIs. Quintana had a double and a single. Katie Larson, Bailey Bouman and Elliott Lenz each recorded a hit.
Balesteri (2-4) took the loss for DSU. She pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits. Mackey worked 2/3 innings in relief and gave up two runs on three hits.
Bouman tossed a complete game victory for USF. She limited DSU to two hits and recorded six strikeouts.
Game 2 - University of Sioux Falls 6, Dakota State 5
Dakota State gained its first lead of the game in the opening inning. Mackey hit an RBI double to score Renaye Gamson for a 1-0 DSU lead. Jessica McLane added a 2-RBI single to score Mackey and Brittany Hill as the Trojans earned a 3-0 lead.
Hill added an RBI single to score Neiman in the top second frame to extend DSU's lead to 4-0.
The Cougars scored their first run of the game by a passed ball in the bottom of the second inning to cut their deficit to 4-1.
USF added a run in the bottom fourth frame to cut DSU's lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Turner hit a 2-RBI double as USF tied the game at 4-4.
Lexy Miller hit an RBI single to score Balesteri in the top of the sixth inning as the Trojans regained their lead at 5-4.
The Cougars tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning caused by DSU's defensive error. With two outs and runner third base, Dewey reached on base by error as the Cougars scored from third base to secure the win.
Mackey and Hill each had a double, a single and an RBI for DSU. Balesteri added a double. McLane had a single and produced two RBIs. Neiman and Miller each had a single.
Turner recorded a double, a single and two RBIs for USF. Dewey added two hits and two runs scored. Larson, Bouman, She Stewart, Roden and Lenz each had a hit.
DSU committed four errors in the game, while University of Sioux Falls had none.
Mackey (7-15) took the loss for the Trojans. She pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed six unearned runs on nine hits.
Amanda Walters started on the mound for the Cougars. She pitched 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on three hits. Bouman (8-10) recorded the victory as she worked 6 2/3 innings in relief. She allowed two runs (one unearned) on five hits. Bouman struck out five DSU's batters.
Dakota State finished their regular-season at 13-24 overall record. USF is 15-19.
