YANKTON, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team returned back to action Wednesday evening at Riverside Park.  The Trojans visited their in-state rival Mount Marty.  DSU fell short 3-2 in the first game in eight innings, but bounced back to defeat the Lancers 6-2 in the second game to earn a doubleheader split.

Dakota State's overall record sits at 12-15 after the victory.  Mount Marty, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, dropped to 3-23.

Game 1 - Mount Marty 3, Dakota State 2 (8 innings)

Dakota State gained its first lead of the game in the top of the third inning.  The Trojans produced three straight singles with two outs from Lexy Miller, Renaye Gamson and Leslie Neiman.  Neiman recorded an RBI single to score Miller to earn a 1-0 lead for DSU.

MMC's Amanda Volgarino hit an RBI single with two outs to score Lauren Orwing to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Alisa Balesteri opened with a double in the top seventh frame for the Trojans.  She advanced to third base by Chelsea Kruse's sacrifice bunt.  With two outs, Gamson hit an RBI single to score Balesteri to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.

The Lancers tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning caused by DSU's defensive error.  The Trojans prevented MMC to score another run as the game was extended into extra innings.

With international rules in effect for extra innings (runner on second base with the last out from the previous inning), DSU was unable to score a run as they went three-and-out in the top of the eighth inning.

Andrea Hansen hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Orwing to third base to open the bottom eighth frame for Mount Marty.  Michaela Bunde recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Orwing as the Lancers sealed the victory.

Gamson, Kulp and Miller each had two hits for DSU.  Balesteri recorded a double and a run scored.  Kruse and Neiman each had a single.

Mercedees Ricke had two singles for the Lancers.  Volgarino, Emily Girard and Orwing each added a single.

The Trojans left seven runners on base.  MMC had four runners left on base.

DSU outhit the Lancers 9-5 in the game.

Taylor Mackey (6-10) recorded the loss for Dakota State.  She tossed 7 2/3 innings and gave up three runs (one unearned) on five hits.  Mackey struck out four MMC's batters.

Brittany Bruns (1-13) pitched a complete game win for Mount Marty.  She allowed two runs on nine hits.

Game 2 - Dakota State 6, Mount Marty 2

Brittany Hill hit a double to open the top of the second inning for the Trojans.  Kulp recorded an RBI single to score Hill to give DSU a 1-0 lead.

Dakota State produced three runs and five hits in the top of the fourth frame to extend their lead.  Jessica McLane and Balesteri hit back-to-back RBI single.  Brittany Tebbe added an RBI single to expand DSU's lead to 4-0.

Shaina Lonnenman hit an RBI double in the bottom fifth inning as MMC trimmed their deficit to 4-1.

The Trojans scored twice in the final inning.  Mackey recorded an RBI single to score Tebbe.  Hill hit her third double of the game and scored Mackey to make it 6-1 in favor of Dakota State.

Mount Marty scored once in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Trojans secured the victory as MMC left two runners on base.

Hill produced three doubles, two runs scored and an RBI for DSU.  Gamson, Tebbe and Kulp each had two singles.  Mackey, McLane and Balesteri each had a single and an RBI.

Lonnenman had a double and a single for the Lancers.  Loutsch recorded a double and an RBI.  Paige Rechtenbaugh had a hit.

The Trojans outhit MMC 12-4.  DSU swiped three bases in the game - one each by Kulp, McLane and Balesteri.

Hill (1-1) tossed a complete game victory for Dakota State.  She pitched a no-hitter through four innings.  Hill allowed two unearned runs on four hits.

Jenna Peters (2-7) recorded the loss for the Lancers.  She pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed six runs on 12 hits.  Peters struck out five DSU's batters.  Jessica Polk worked 1/3 innings in relief.

Dakota State returns home on Saturday for their four-game home stand.  The Trojans host another in-state rival team, Dakota Wesleyan.  First game is slated to start at 1 p.m. at Thue Softball Complex.
