OMAHA, Neb. - The Dakota State University softball team returned back to action on the road Saturday afternoon at the Heritage Park. The Trojans suffered a doubleheader sweep by Saint Mary (Neb.). The Flames defeated DSU 6-5 in eight innings in the first game and 5-3 in the second game.
Dakota State lost their fifth straight game and dropped their overall record to 8-8. Saint Mary, a member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, won their third straight games after losing their first 11 games of the season (3-11 overall record).
Game 1 - Saint Mary (Neb.) 6, Dakota State 5 (8 innings)
The Trojans jumped to a quick 2-0 lead to open the game. Renaye Gamson started the game with a walk and swiped to second base. Taylor Mackey hit a single and advanced Gamson to third base. Brittany Hill recorded an RBI single to score Gamson for DSU's first run of the game. The Trojans added another run by Emily Kulp's RBI ground out to score Mackey.
Saint Mary produced four runs in the bottom first frame. Audree Uhlarik and Jessika Reyes each recorded an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. Jenny Synowiecki hit a 2-RBI double to gain a 4-2 lead.
Uhlarik recorded her second RBI single of the game in the bottom of the second inning to extend Flames' lead to 5-2.
In the top of the third inning, Jessica McLane hit an RBI single to score Leslie Neiman as DSU trimmed their deficit to 5-3.
Pinch hitter Alisa Balesteri hit an RBI single with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to cut Flames' lead to 5-4.
Mackey hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning as DSU tied the game at 5-5.
Saint Mary went three-and-out in the final inning as the Trojans forced the game into extra innings.
The Trojans were unable to score in the top of the eighth inning as they left three runners on base.
With bases loaded and two outs situation for the Flames in the bottom eighth inning, Reyes hit an RBI single to score Lynn Fibich as Saint Mary secured the victory.
Mackey had a home run, a double and scored twice for DSU. McLane added two singles and an RBI. Hill and Balesteri each had a single and an RBI. Lexy Miller, Mackey and Gamson each recorded one stolen base.
Fibich had two singles, swiped two bases and scored two runs for Saint Mary. Synowiecki recorded a double and two RBIs. Uhlarik and Reyes each had two singles and two RBIs.
Brittany Tebbe started the game for Dakota State. She pitched the first two innings and allowed five runs on six hits. Mackey took the loss as she worked 5 2/3 innings. She gave up one unearned run on three hits.
Uhlarik tossed a complete game win for the Flames. She allowed five runs (two unearned) on six hits. She recorded five strikeouts.
Game 2 - Saint Mary (Neb.) 5, Dakota State 3
Hill hit an RBI single to score Gamson to open the second game with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The Flames answered with two runs scored in the bottom first frame. Fibich scored caused by DSU's defensive error to tie the game at 1-1. Synowiecki hit an RBI single to give CSM a 2-1 lead.
Gamson hit a two-out double in the top of the second inning. Neiman recorded an RBI single to score Gamson as the Trojans tied the game at 2-2.
Chili Gonzalex-Kelso hit an RBI single in the bottom third frame to gain a 3-2 lead for the Flames.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Hannah Mays recorded an RBI double to extend CSM's lead to 4-2.
The Trojans trimmed their deficit to 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning. Miller recorded an RBI double to score Hill.
Mays added her second RBI of the game in the bottom fifth frame to make it 5-3 in favor of Saint Mary.
DSU was unable to rally back in the final inning as they left two runners on base.
Hill was 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles and an RBI for the Trojans. Gamson had a double, a single and scored twice. Mackey recorded a double and a single. Kulp, McLane, Miller and Tebbe each had a hit.
Mays had a double and two RBIs for the Flames. Synowiecki and Brianna Triplett each had two singles. Natasha Chapman, Shelbi Hatfield, Uhlarik and Reyes each had a single.
The Trojans outhit Saint Mary 12-9 in the game. Both teams left 10 runners on base.
Mackey (4-5) recorded the loss for DSU. She tossed six innings and allowed five runs (two unearned) on nine hits. She struck out five CSM's batters.
Reyes (1-4) pitched a complete game victory for the Flames. She gave up three runs (one unearned) on 12 hits.
Dakota State looks to rebound back in the winning column Sunday. The Trojans play another doubleheader with Saint Mary at Heritage Park. First game is slated to start at 12 noon.
