MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team returned home on Monday evening. The Trojans hosted Black Hills State in a Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) doubleheader at the Thue Softball Complex. DSU snapped their 10-game losing streak with 10-1 win over the Yellow Jackets in the first game. Black Hills State won the second game 6-2 to earn a split with the Trojans.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 12-19 and 1-13 in the DAC conference. Black Hills State is 9-23 overall and 4-10 in the conference.
Game 1 - Dakota State 10, Black Hills State 1 (5 innings)
Jesica Alcala opened the bottom of the first inning with a triple down the right field line for DSU. Ashley Stevenson hit an RBI single to score Alcala to give DSU a 1-0 lead. Amanda Stevenson added an RBI single to make it 2-0 in favor of the Trojans. Alisa Balesteri hit a 3-RBI double to complete DSU's five-run in the opening inning.
Black Hills State got their first and only run of the game in the top of the second inning. Krista Gleiforst hit an RBI single to score Kelli Heiser to cut DSU's lead to 5-1.
The Trojans extended their lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the second frame. Amanda Stevenson hit a 2-RBI single to score Alcala and her sister Ashley Stevenson.
Dakota State produced three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to expand their lead to 10-1. BHSU committed four errors in the inning.
DSU ended the game in the fifth inning due to mercy rule.
Balesteri and Amanda Stevenson each had three RBIs for Dakota State. Ashley Stevenson added two RBIs. Alcala went 1-for-2 with a triple, two runs scored, an RBI and recorded a walk. Natasha Fritz and Jessica Shaw each had a single.
For Black Hills State, Alex Huntington had a double. Gleiforst recorded a single and an RBI. Kyley Barlea and Heiser each added a single.
The Yellow Jackets recorded six defensive errors in the game compared to the Trojans' two.
Balesteri (5-8) tossed a complete game for Dakota State. She allowed one run on four hits.
Heiser (1-3) was the losing pitcher for BHSU. She worked 1/3 inning and gave up three runs (two unearned) on three hits. Kelsie Chambers came in for 1 2/3 innings in relief. She allowed five runs (two unearned) on four hits. Niki Chacon pitched the final two innings of the game. She gave up two unearned runs.
Game 2 - Black Hills State 6, Dakota State 2
Black Hills State exploded for three runs in the opening inning of the second game. A passed ball by DSU allowed the Yellow Jackets scored their first run of the game. Aleisha Giesey hit an RBI triple to score Barela to extend their lead to 2-0. Chambers added an RBI ground out to score Giesey to give BHSU a 3-0 lead.
Giesey hit her second triple of the game in the top of the third inning for BHSU. Heiser hit an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Giesey to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-0 lead.
BHSU added a run in the top of the fourth frame by DSU's wild pitch.
The Yellow Jackets made it 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning by Heiser's RBI single to score Barela.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alcala scored by BHSU's defensive error. Jayna Ackerman added an RBI single to score Fritz to trim BHSU's lead to 6-2.
DSU was unable to score in the final inning as the Yellow Jackets secured the win.
Alcala, Ackerman, Shaw and Neiman each had a single for the Trojans. Ackerman had an RBI. Fritz and Alcala each recorded a stolen base.
Giesey went 3-for-4 behind the plate with two triples for BHSU. Huntington and Rebecca Hugley each recorded a double. Barela, Chambers, Heiser, Regina Thaler and Nicole Albers each hit a single.
Shaw (5-11) took the loss as she started on the mount for Dakota State. She tossed two innings and allowed four runs on four hits. Balesteri pitched three innings in relief. She gave up two runs on four hits. Brittany Tebbe worked two innings in relief and limited the Yellow Jackets to two hits.
Huntington (2-5) pitched a complete game victory for the Yellow Jackets. She allowed two unearned runs on four hits.
Dakota State and Black Hills State will conclude their four-game series on Tuesday at the Thue Softball Complex. The doubleheader starts at 3 p.m.
