RAPID CITY, S.D. - Playing at the neutral field (Parkview Park), the Dakota State University faced Dickinson State in a Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) doubleheader on Saturday. The Trojans fell short to the Blue Hawks 4-1 and 2-0.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 11-18 and 0-12 in the DAC conference. Dickinson State, No. 21 in the latest NAIA Softball national poll, won their seventh straight game. The Blue Hawks raised their overall record to 18-10 and 8-2 in the conference.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled to play in Dickinson, N.D., but was forced to move their games due to wet weather in North Dakota.
Game 1 - Dickinson State 4, Dakota State 1
Ikea Maudlin hit an RBI single to score Nicole Youngblood to give the Blue Hawks a 1-0 lead in bottom first frame.
Dakota State tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning by Ashley Stevenson's solo home run. It was her second home run of the season.
Dickinson State opened with four straight singles in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Blue Hawks produced three runs and five hits to give them a 4-1 lead.
The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring opportunities in the final inning. Dakota State left two runners on base.
Jayna Ackerman was perfect behind the plate for the Trojans. She was 3-for-3 with a double and two singles. Jescia Alcala, Emily Kulp, Alisa Balesteri and Leslie Nieman each had single.
Youngblood and Nathalie Martinez was 2-for-3 with two singles for Dickinson State. Charnel Zetsch, Maudlin and Martinez each recorded an RBI.
Both teams left seven runners on base.
Balesteri (4-8) suffered the loss for Dakota State. She pitched a complete game and gave up four runs on nine hits.
Taysia Kaufman (9-4) tossed a complete game for the Blue Hawks. She allowed one run on eight hits.
Game 2 - Dickinson State 2, Dakota State 0
The Trojans and Blue Hawks were unable to score in the first three innings.
Youngblood opened the bottom of the fourth inning with a double for Dickinson State. Zetsch hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Youngblood to give the Blue Hawks 1-0 lead.
Dickinson State added a run in the bottom fifth frame to extend their lead to 2-0.
Stevenson and Kulp each had a walk for the Trojans. Dakota State left four runners left on base.
Lindsey Sullivan went 2-for-3 behind the plate for Dickinson State. Vanessa Adame, Martinez and Erika Nowack each had a single. The Blue Hawks left eight runners on base.
Jessica Shaw (5-10) took the loss for Dakota State. She started the game and worked for 4 2/3 innings. Shaw allowed two runs on four hits. Brittany Tebbe tossed 1 1/3 shutout innings. She limited the Blue Hawks to two hits.
Sara Jane Webster (8-6) pitched a complete shutout game for Dickinson State. She recorded 12 strikeouts.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they return home on Monday. The Trojans will host Black Hills State in the first two games of the four-game series. The first game is slated to start at 5 p.m. at the Thue Softball Complex.
