SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team faced Minot State University in Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) action on Saturday. The Trojans and Beavers played at the Black Hills State Softball Complex. Minot State swept DSU 8-3 and 1-0.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 11-16 and 0-10 in the DAC conference. Minot State raised their record to 19-7 and 6-2 in the conference.
Sunday's doubleheader was canceled due to poor weather conditions.
Game 1 - Minot State 8, Dakota State 3
Dakota State scored its first run of the game in the opening inning. Ashley Stevenson reached on base by walk with two outs. Amanda Stevenson hit an RBI triple (her eighth triple this season and tied the DSU school record for most triples in a single season with Mandy Austin in 2001) and scored her sister Ashley to give DSU a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first inning, Minot State scored three times to overtake the lead from the Trojans 3-1.
The Beavers added two runs in the bottom third frame to extend their lead to 5-1.
Jayna Ackerman hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to trim Minot State's lead to 5-2.
Minot State extended their lead to 8-2 with three runs scored in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Ackerman hit her second solo home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning to cut their deficit to 8-3. The Trojans could not convert their scoring opportunity as they left three runners on base when Minot State secured the win.
Ackerman was perfect behind the plate for DSU. She went 3-for-3 with two solo home runs, a single and recorded two RBIs. Amanda Stevenson had a triple. Jesica Alcala, Ashley Stevenson, Jessica Shaw and Leslie Neiman each had a single.
For Minot State, Deanna Mitchell recorded two doubles, a single and three runs scored. Stacey Fournier had two singles, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Dakota State stranded nine runners on base. Minot State had six runners left on base.
Shaw (5-9) took the loss on the mound for the Trojans. She tossed 5 2/3 innings and allowed eight runs (seven unearned) on seven hits. Brittany Tebbe worked 1/3 innings in relief.
Mandy Greenberg (10-5) recorded the victory for Minot State. She pitched six innings and gave up two runs on five hits. Greenberg struck out seven DSU batters. Katie Backes came in the top of the seventh inning and allowed a run on two hits. Jen Dixon finished the game and limited the Trojans to one hit.
Game 2 - Minot State 1, Dakota State 0
Both teams were unable to score in the first five innings.
Dixon opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple for the Beavers. Colleen Bertrand hit an RBI single to score Dixon to give Minot State a 1-0 lead.
DSU was unable to score in the final inning as they left one runner on base.
Ashley Stevenson, Amanda Stevenson, Ackerman and Neiman each had a single for the Trojans. Ashley Stevenson swiped two bases.
Dixon led Minot State with a triple and a single. Bertrand recorded two singles. Kyla Thiesen, Mitchell, Stacey Fournier and Leah Matthewson each had a single.
Dakota State left seven runners on base. The Beavers had six runners left on base.
Alisa Balesteri (4-7) recorded the loss for DSU. She tossed five innings and allowed one run on seven hits. Tebbe pitched one inning in relief.
Dixon (5-2) tossed a complete game victory for the Beavers. She allowed four hits and recorded eight strikeouts.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they continue their action in the conference on Friday and Saturday. The Trojans will head to Dickinson State in a four-game series in Dickinson, N.D.
