MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team continued their six-game home stand on Saturday. The Trojans hosted Mayville State in a Dakota Athletic Conference at the Thue Softball Field. The Comets rallied in the first game with two-run in the seventh inning to defeat the Trojans 8-7. Dakota State suffered the second game loss to the Comets 9-3.

The Trojans dropped their overall record to 11-10 and 0-6 in the DAC conference. Mayville State lifted their record to 6-12 and won their first two conference games of the season.

Game 1 - Mayville State 8, Dakota State 7

A wild pitch by DSU in the top of the first inning allowed the Comets scored their first run of the game for 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second frame, Angelique Macias hit a solo home run to extend Mayville State's lead to 2-0.

Amanda Stevenson opened with a triple in the bottom of the second inning for Dakota State. Emily Kulp hit an RBI ground out to score Amanda Stevenson as DSU cut Comets' lead to 2-1.

The Trojans scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning to gain their first lead of the game at 4-2. With two outs, Kulp and Jessica McLane hit back-to-back singles. Leslie Neiman hit a 2-RBI triple to score Kulp and McLane. Natasha Fritz added an RBI infield single to score Neiman.

Mayville State regained their lead in the top of the fifth inning with four runs scored for a 6-4 lead.

With bases loaded and one out situation for DSU in the bottom of the sixth frame, Jayna Ackerman hit a 3-RBI triple to give the Trojans a 7-6 lead.

Krista Hendricks hit an RBI single and Katie Corbin added an RBI double to give the Comets 8-7 lead in the top of the seventh inning.

The Trojans opened up the final inning with back-to-back singles from sisters Ashley and Amanda Stevenson to set a scoring opportunity. The Comets' defense ended the game with runners left on third and second bases.

Ackerman went 1-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs for Dakota State. Amanda Stevenson and Neiman each added a triple and a single. Neiman had two RBIs.

For Mayville State, Macias had three hits, three runs scored and recorded two RBIs. Elizabeth Best Still, Cara Delgado and Hendricks each had two hits.

Alisa Balesteri (4-4) took the loss for DSU. She tossed 4 1/3 innings and allowed six runs (two unearned) on nine hits. Balesteri struck out three batters. Brittany Tebbe pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief. She gave up two runs on three hits. Tebbe recorded four strikeouts.

Valea Crowder recorded a complete game victory for Mayville State. She allowed seven runs on 11 hits. Crowder struck out four batters.

Game 2 - Mayville State 9, Dakota State 3

After two scoreless innings, Mayville State scored twice in the top of the third inning for a 2-0 lead.

The Comets produced a total of seven runs in the top of the fifth and sixth frames to extend their lead to 9-0.

Dakota State recorded two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to trim MaSU's lead to 9-2. Amanda Stevenson hit an RBI single to score Ashley Stevenson. Kulp added an RBI double to score Amanda Stevenson.

The Trojans added a run in the final inning by Jesica Alcala's RBI triple to score Ackerman, but it was not enough to defeat the Comets.

Kulp went 2-for-3 with a double, a single and an RBI for DSU. Alcala and Amanda Stevenson each added a hit and an RBI. Ashley Stevenson recorded two stolen bases.

For Mayville State, Macias and Jamie Scott each had a double. Jessica Flores added two hits. Best-Still and Macias each recorded two RBIs.

Dakota State committed seven errors in the game compared to the Comets' one.

Shaw (5-6) recorded the loss for the Trojans. She tossed 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven unearned runs on seven hits. Balesteri pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief. She gave up two unearned runs.

Crowder notched the win for Mayville State. She pitched five innings and limited the Trojans to one hit. Ashley VandeVeen came in to pitch in the sixth inning. She allowed two runs on two hits. Alexis Franco pitched the seventh inning and gave up one run on one hit.

Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column on Sunday. The Trojans and Comets conclude their four-game series at the Thue Softball Complex. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
