Mt. Marty races by Lady T's 68-56
By Dan Holsworth, Madison Daily Leader (Madison, SD) - Mt. Marty College raced to a 32-4 lead over Dakota State University with just over 6 minutes remaining in the first half. The Lady Lancers went on to post a 44-18 halftime lead, leading up to a 68-56 defeat of the Lady T's in the DSU Memorial Field House on Tuesday. The decision left DSU at 1-4. "Our biggest thing right now is that our players need to get into their own 'comfort zones' in the roles they are playing right now," said DSU Coach Joe Reints. Mt. Marty ended the first half with 59-percent (19-for-32) field goal shooting, while limiting the Lady T's to just 32-percent (7-22) field goal shooting.
In the second half, however, the Lady T's held Mt. Marty to 6-23 shooting from the field, while going 14-31 themselves. DSU made a late-game charge at the Lady Lancers, cutting the lead to 61-52 on a Megan Swecker field goal with a little over a minute left in the contest. "We're having our ups and downs, and last night was a big downer," added Reints. "We have to play each game a full 40 minutes of consistent basketball, but we're going to get better."
Mt. Marty was led in scoring by Amber Marsden, Michelle Amundson, and Kylie Gross, who had 19, 16 and 10 points, respectively. Katelynn Kunz added 9 points and Dana Marquartdt 8. Swecker was DSU's scoring leader, tipping in 11 points. Teammate Katie Bourk also entered double-digit territory with 10 points. Abby Melhbrech and Dayna Tschakert added 8 points apiece for the Lady T's. Despite the loss, DSU earned a 38-31 rebound edge over Mt. Marty as Melhbrech and Tschakert each swiped the boards for 5 rebounds. Mt. Marty's board leader was Cassie Noth with six rebounds.
