Lady T's Tabbed to Finish 7th Tie in DAC Preseason Poll
(Dickinson, ND) - Jamestown College tops a close race for the number one spot in the 2008-09 Dakota Athletic Conference Preseason Women's Basketball Coaches' Poll. The Jimmies received five first place ballots to top the rankings. Despite losing second team All DAC guard and DAC Defensive Player of the Year Guili Variano (19.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.6 steals) to an injury, JC returns five players with starting experience, led by third team All DAC senior center Cori Doubek (9.6 points, 7.0 rebounds).
With a pair of first place votes, Minot State finished second in the poll. Third team All DAC senior center Lashay Bagsby (12.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.5 blocks) looks to lead a Beavers team that loses a pair of all conference performers from a squad that advanced to the Elite Eight at the national tournament.
Black Hills State received the final first place selection to finish third in the balloting. Junior guard Brittany Furhman (10.7 points), a third team all conference honoree, is one of two starters returning from the 2007-08 team that advanced to the quarterfinals at the national tourney.
South Dakota Mines finished fourth in the poll. Despite losing a pair of all conference players to graduation, the Hardrockers will have four players back with starting experience. Sophomore forward Jerika Ihnen (9.6 points, 4.8 rebounds), last season's DAC Freshman of the Year and junior forward Bethany Holyoak (13.1 points, 6.3 rebounds), the top returning scorer, look to lead the veteran ball club.
Dickinson State placed fifth in the preseason rankings. The Blue Hawks bring back three starters, led by senior guard Ashley Emmons (7.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists).
Mayville State finished sixth in the voting. The Comets will have a new look with the graduation of all five starters, including a pair of first team All DAC and Honorable Mention All America performers.
Dakota State and Valley City State tied for seventh in the poll. Lady Trojans' new coach Joe Reints will look to replace a starting five that included three all conference performers from the team that advanced to the second round at the national tournament. The Vikings look to rebound from a disappointing campaign with a youthful lineup, led by returning sophomore guards Mandy Johnson (8.5 points, 3.4 rebounds) and Amanda Brown (7.4 points, 3.5 rebounds).
