WBK: Trojans avenge loss to DWU at USF/Holiday Inn Classic

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Dakota State University women's basketball team returned back to action Tuesday night as the Trojans faced Dakota Wesleyan as part of the USF/Holiday Inn Classic at the Stewart Center. The Trojans used a strong shooting performance in the first-half and held on to defeat the Tigers 78-67.
The win lifted the Trojans' overall record to 5-6. The Tigers lost their sixth game in the last seven games and dropped to 5-11. DWU won the first meeting in Mitchell 84-79 on Nov. 10.
With DWU leading 14-13 with 10:47 left in the fist-half, the Trojans used a 12-1 run to take a 25-15 lead with 7:53 left. DSU extended their lead to 46-31 at halftime. The Trojans went 19-for-35 from the field (54.3 percent) compared to DWU's 11-for-36 (30.6 percent) in the first-half.
The Trojans jumped to a 49-31 lead in the second-half before the Tigers made their run. DWU closed the gap to 60-55 with 12:05 left in regulation, but could not get any closer.
Allegra Kohley went 7-for-10 from the field for 17 points off the bench for DSU. Donna Lavea recorded a double-double with 14 points and gathered 11 rebounds. Alyssa Kirk went 4-for-7 from the 3-point line for 14 points. Angela Green added 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Ellesse Washington had eight points and eight rebounds. Katie Bourk dished out seven assists.
Brittany Hills scored 13 points off the bench for the Tigers. She had seven rebounds. Maggie Malloy added 11 points and Allison Johnson had 10 points. Johnson and Kenzie Dvoracek each had four assists.
The Trojans shot 47 percent from the field (31-for-66) compared to the Tigers' 34.8 percent (23-for-66). DSU had two more rebounds than DWU (43-41).
DSU will face the host team University of Sioux Falls on Wednesday, Dec. 30th on the second day of the USF/Holiday Inn Classic. Tip-off is slated at 4 p.m.
