VB: Trojans defeat Tigers for second straight win

MITCHELL, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team played a non-conference match with Dakota Wesleyan Tigers Tuesday. The Trojans recorded their second straight victory with a 3-1 win over the Tigers at the Fosness Arena in the Christen Family Recreation/Wellness Center.
The win lifted DSU to 7-12 overall record. Dakota Wesleyan lost their sixth straight match and dropped to 11-16.
The Tigers defeated the Trojans 3-1 earlier this season in Madison, S.D. The Trojans won by the set scores of 26-24, 25-22, 17-25, 25-15.
DSU was leading by five points, 19-14, in the first set before DWU made a 10-3 run to overtake 24-22 lead. The Trojans responded with four straight points - three on kills by Rachael Jensen - to charge back for a 26-24 first set win.
The Trojans opened up the second set with a 6-0 run. DWU battled back and cut the deficit to one point, 22-21, but the Trojans went on to close the second set with a 25-22 win.
Dakota Wesleyan won the third set by the score of 25-17. The Trojans pulled away in the fourth set by the score of 25-15 for a season split with the Tigers.
Jensen, who was named to DAC volleyball hitter of the week recently, recorded her 11th double-double this season with 18 kills and 16 digs for the Trojans. Ashley Schulte added 12 kills and Margie Anthony had 11 kills. Mollie Merriam had 46 set assists for DSU.
Stephanie Kruggel recorded three service aces for the Trojans. She added 13 digs, one block solo and three block assists. Shelby Tollefson had 17 digs and Amy Pheneger added 10 digs.
Ashley Kley had 15 kills and 10 digs for the Tigers. Jen Miner added eight kills and Jayna Morrill had seven kills. Carina Fesenmaier recorded 31 set assists and 13 digs.
Amye Brown had four service aces and 21 digs for DWU. Kacie Sanderson recorded four block assists.
The Trojans had seven more kills in the match than the Tigers (54-47).
Dakota State will return back to action at home this weekend. The Trojans will begin their second half of the DAC Conference season as they face DAC's only unbeaten team in conference play, Jamestown College, on Friday night at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Trojans will welcome Valley City State in an afternoon match-up at 3 p.m. All matches will be held at the DSU Fieldhouse.
