Trojan Football comes up short with No. 22 Dickinson State

MADISON, S.D. - The Trojan football team was looking for their first win of the season as they hosted Dickinson State Blue Hawks. Dakota State kept the game close through the third quarter, but suffered a 35-14 defeat to the Blue Hawks at the Trojan Field.
Dakota State fell to 0-7 overall and 0-6 in the DAC Conference. Dickinson State, No. 22 in the latest NAIA Football National Poll, won their sixth straight game to raise their overall record to 6-2 and 6-0 in the DAC Conference.
The Blue Hawks scored on the opening drive of the game with five plays for 58 yards in 2 minutes and 24 seconds. Cody Holland threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Derek Pauley to make it 6-0. Cole Zamira made the PAT kick to make it 7-0.
The Trojans opened with a successful 70-yard pass from Paul Bagala to Eric Farrer on the Trojans' 24-yardline. Dakota State was unable to score as they turned on downs on Dickinson State's 3-yardline.
The Blue Hawks made it 13-0 as Holland scored an option rushing touchdown for four yards.
Dakota State cut the deficit in the first quarter as Bagala connected to Farrer for a 64-yard touchdown pass. Stacey Berg's PAT kick was good to cut the Blue Hawk's lead to 13-7 with 50 seconds left in the first quarter.
Dickinson State scored another touchdown in the second quarter from James Macey's two yards touchdown. The Blue Hawks made a successful 2-point conversion as Holland threw a pass to Pauley to make it 21-7 Blue Hawks.
The Trojans came back and closed the gap as Bagala connected to Berg for a three-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. Berg made the extra point to make it 21-14 Dickinson State.
Dickinson State scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to make 35-14 the final score.
Bagala went 31-for-52 with 338 yards and two touchdowns for the Trojans. Farrer had six receptions for 168 yards. Berg added five receptions for 53 yards. Drew Allen had 10 catches for 47 yards.
For Dickinson State, Holland was 12-for-16 with 287 yards. He had two touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown. Pauley had three receptions for 79 yards. Clint Grosz had three catches for 60 yards and Max Pearson had a reception for 59 yards.
Macey rushed 21 times for 92 yards and Zach Hepperle added 14 carries for 68 yards for the Blue Hawks.
The Trojans had 344 passing yards compared to the Blue Hawks' 287. The Blue Hawks out-gained the Trojans in total offense yards, 488-346.
On defense, Joe Whealy recorded 16 tackles for the Trojans. Eric Liles had 15 tackles and Joe Monize added 11 tackles. Craig Hertz had 10 tackles and Bryce Logan 9.
Deavan Washington and Jamie Sigl had five tackles for the Blue Hawks.
Dakota State will play their last home game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Trojan Field. They will host Mayville State at 1:30 p.m. Senior Day will be honored prior to the game.
