Women's Basketball: Trojans come up short in road loss to Dordt

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - The Dakota State University women's basketball continued their action on the road as they traveled to the DeWitt Gymnasium Tuesday.  The Trojans faced Dordt College Defenders in non-conference action.  The Defenders rushed to a 50-29 halftime lead and handed the Trojans a 91-70 defeat.

The loss dropped the Trojans' overall record to 2-4.  Dordt raised their record to 2-4.

With Dordt leading 20-18 with 9:20 left in the first half, the Defenders sparked a 20-3 run for a 40-20 lead.  The Trojans could not get any closer than 21 points the rest of the game.

Both Trojans and Defenders scored 41 points in the second half.

Four DSU players scored in double figures led by Ellesse Washington with 16 points.  Donna Lavea and Sophia Perez each scored 14 points.  Alyssa Kirk added 10 points.  Lashonda Martin and Katie Bourk each had three assists.

Washington and Lavea each grabbed five rebounds for the Trojans.  Washington had four steals.

Amber Soodsma went 11-for-17 from the field with 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Defenders.  McKinzie Schmidt recorded a double-double with 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Kate Du Mez added a double-double with 12 points and dished 10 assists.  Brianna Spronk and Bailey Spencer each scored 11 points off the bench.

The Defenders outshot the Trojans 54.4 percent to 39.3 percent.  Dordt made 37 field goals compared to the Trojans' 24.

DC had a rebounding edge over the Trojans. 45-28.  The Defenders had eight blocked shots led by Bre Schneidermann with four.

The Defenders outscored the Trojans in the paint 44-34 and fast-break points, 14-0.  Dordt scored 29 points off turnovers compared to DSU's 14 points.

DSU will try to snap their four-game losing streak as they head on the road Saturday.  The Trojans will face NCAA Division III Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D.  Tip-off is slated at 5:30 p.m. at the Strode Center.
