MBK: Trojans fall short to Vikings in overtime

BLAIR, Neb. - The Dakota State University men's basketball team traveled to the Gardner-Hawks Center for a non-conference game with Dana College Vikings. The Vikings defeated the Trojans 81-79 in an overtime thriller on Friday night.
Dana snapped Trojans' four-game winning streak as DSU dropped to 5-4 overall. Dana ended their six-game losing streak that started with the 86-80 loss to the Trojans at the Ed Harter Classic on Nov. 14th and raised their record to 3-8.
The Trojans opened with an 8-0 run. The Vikings used a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 10-9 with 12:28 left in the first half.
Dana took their first lead of the game at 20-19 with less than six minutes to go in the first half. DSU went on a 14-9 closing run to take a 33-29 halftime lead.
With the Trojans leading 39-34, the Vikings used an 8-0 run to take a 42-41 lead with 14:29 left in regulation. The Trojans rallied back with a mini 6-0 run for a 45-42 lead.
At 53-all, DSU went on an 11-5 spurt to put the Trojans up by six points (64-58). Dana used an 11-3 run to overtake the lead at 69-67 with 1:52 left in the game.
With the score at 71-70 Dana and 18 seconds left, DSU's Bryce Snyder made 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 71. Dana's Taylor Oltjenbruns missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the game headed to overtime.
The Trojans opened with a 74-71 lead in overtime. The Vikings used a 5-0 run to take lead at 76-74. Trojan Brice Christensen made a layup to tie the game at 76.
The Vikings extended to 80-76 lead in the closing seconds. Trojan Bryce Kreutzfeldt made a layup to cut the deficit at 80-78 with 8.9 seconds left. Dana's Jake Brandl made 1-of-2 free throws to put the Vikings up 81-78. Dana drew a foul on Kreutzfeldt with 2.2 seconds. Kreutzfeldt missed the first free throw and attempted to miss the second free throw, which he did make and the Vikings held on for the win.
Four DSU players scored in double figures. Santino Clay scored 21 points. He shot 8-for-16 from the field, including 4-for-6 from the 3-point line. He fouled out with 2:17 left in regulation. Jackson Parr recorded a double-double with 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds off the bench. Bryce Snyder scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double. Kreutzfeldt had 10 points and dished five assists.
For Dana, Oltjenbruns scored 21 points off the bench. AJ Arkfeld had 13 points. Blake Maaske and Alex McCleary each scored 10 points off the bench. Chris Walker had 10 rebounds.
The Trojans shot 49.2 percent from the field (29-of-59) compared to the Vikings' 34.3 percent (23-of-67). The Vikings went 29-for-40 at the free-throw line, 19-for-22 in the second half. DSU was 14-for-24 at the free-throw line.
DSU outrebounded Dana 45-37, but the Trojans committed 26 turnovers in the game. Dana had 15 turnovers. The Vikings outscored the Trojans 26-17 in points off turnovers.
The Trojans will play their final exhibition game on Saturday, Dec. 19th against NCAA Division II Augustana College at the Elmen Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. Tip-off is scheduled at 4 p.m. DSU will return home on Sunday, Dec. 20th for a non-conference game with Ashford (Iowa). The game will be held at the DSU Fieldhouse at 2 p.m.
