MBK: Trojans won fourth straight game with win over Mayville State

Derek Kreutzfeldt - Photo by Scott VoigtMADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University men's basketball team opened their DAC Conference play as they welcomed Mayville State Comets at the DSU Fieldhouse Saturday.  DSU went on a 41-28 halftime lead and held on for the win over the Comets, 81-69.

The Trojans won their fourth straight game and raised their overall record to 5-3 and 1-0 in the DAC Conference.  Mayville State dropped back to .500 at 5-5 overall and 0-1 in the DAC.

After DSU's 24-21 lead with 6:31 left in the first-half, the Trojans used a 17-7 run to close the first half.  DSU's Santino Clay netted down a 3-pointer before the teams headed in the locker room.

The Trojans continued to control the second-half as they went on a 16-7 run for Trojans' 57-35 lead with 10:16 left in regulation.

The Comets used a 32-19 run to cut the deficit to 76-67 with 54 seconds left in the game.  The Trojans made their free throws in closing seconds to seal the win.

The Trojans played without Jackson Parr who was injured.

Four Trojan players scored in double figures.  Derek Kreutzfeldt went 5-for-6 from the field, 2-2 from the 3-point line and 10-for-11 from the free-throw line for 22 points.  Clay added 19 points with 6-for-13 night from the field, 2-for-4 from the 3-point line and 5-for-7 at the free-throw line.  He had four steals.  Jason DeZeeuw added 11 points.  Aaron King scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists.

Brian Bolin added seven points, grabbed 12 rebounds and recorded three blocked shots for DSU.  Eric Bauder added nine points, grabbed eight rebounds and recorded three blocked shots.

For Mayville State, Marcus Carson had 17 points on 7-for-14 from the field.  Anton Coleman added 16 points and dished out four assists.  Dalonte Gibson had four steals.

The Trojans outrebounded the Comets 45-31.  DSU committed 24 turnovers compared to the Comets' 14.  Mayville State scored 29 points off turnovers compared to DSU 19.

DSU was 30-for-42 from the free-throw line compared to the Comets' 8-for-16.  The Trojans shot 47.9 percent (23-for-48) compared to the Comets' 40.6 percent (28-for-69).

The Trojans will attempt to make it five straight wins as they face Dana College on Friday, Dec. 11th.  It will be both teams second meeting of the season in Blair, Neb.  The Trojans won the first meeting in Madison, S.D. as part of the Ed Harter Classic by a score of 86-80.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
