WBK: DSU opens DAC Conference season with home win over Comets

MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University and Mayville State University opened their DAC Conference season Saturday afternoon at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans jumped to an 11-0 lead and never trailed in the game as the Trojans defeated the Comets 79-59.
The win lifted the Trojans overall record to 4-5 and 1-0 in the DAC Conference. Mayville State suffered their sixth straight defeat after opening with three straight wins and dropped to 0-1 in the DAC.
The Comets missed their first five shots to allow the Trojans score 11 straight points. Mayville State used a 13-5 run to cut the deficit to 16-13 with 12:41 left in the first half.
DSU had a 24-19 lead with 6:55 left before intermission, the Trojans went on another 11-0 run to expand their lead at 35-19. DSU's Lashonda Martin hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to put the Trojans up at 40-24 heading in the locker room.
DSU continued to keep their lead in the second half. The Trojans expanded their largest lead to 70-44 with 4:23 left in the second half.
The Trojans used their balanced scoring attack as each Trojan scored at least two points. Ellesse Washington led the Trojans with 16 points and she was 7-for-15 from the field. She grabbed eight rebounds.
Donna Lavea, Martin and Allegra Kohley each added 11 points. Katie Bourk had nine points. Alyssa Kirk scored eight points and dished five assists.
Lavea had seven rebounds and three blocked shots for the Trojans.
Erin Ericson scored 17 points off the bench for Mayville State. Laura Taylor added 14 points. Danielle Guilbert grabbed 14 rebounds and recorded four blocked shots.
The key stat in the game was the turnovers. The Comets committed 27 turnovers compared to the Trojans' eight. The Trojans scored 27 points off turnovers to Mayville State's five points.
Both teams recorded 49 rebounds.
The Trojans were 31-for-81 from the field (38.3 percent) compared to the Comets' 19-for-61 from the field (31.1 percent).
DSU will step out of the DAC Conference and regular-season on Saturday, Dec. 12th. The Trojans will face NCAA Division I University of Wyoming in the BlueCross BlueShield of Wyoming Shootout in Casper, Wyo. Tip-off is slated at 2 p.m. (CT)/1 p.m. (MT).
