Women's Basketball: Trojans rallied past Peru State in season opener

PERU, Neb. - The Dakota State University women's basketball team opened their 2009-2010 campaign on the road in Nebraska. The Trojans came off with a 83-77 victory over Peru State College.
The Trojans felt behind in the first half with a 41-34 halftime deficit. PSC had a 47.1% shooting in the first half compared to the Trojans' 35.7%. Peru State held a 11-point lead with 12 minutes to go before the Trojans rallied to overtake the lead.
DSU used a 49-36 second half run to secure the first victory of the season. The Trojans shot 43.3% in the second half.
Ellesse Washington led the Trojans with a double-double of 26 points and 13 rebounds. She went 9-for-13 from the field and 7-for 8 at the charity stripe. Katie Bourk added 15 points. Allegra Kohley came off the bench with 11 points.
Four Peru State scored in double digits. Avyn Vaden came off the bench with 18 points. Monique McDuffie added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Reanna Dean and Lanori Washington each had 13 points.
The key stats in the game was the free throws. The Trojans was 30-for-37 compared to the Peru State's 17-for-28. Peru State shot 41.2% from the field to the Trojans' 39.7%.
Peru State held a slight edge in rebounding margin, 38-37.
Dakota State returns home Tuesday night as they face No. 15 University of Sioux Falls. The non-conference game will be held at the DSU Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
