Men's Basketball: Trojans lose to Cougars in Famous Dave’s Classic

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Dakota State University men’s basketball traveled to the Stewart Center to participate in the USF/Famous Dave’s Classic. The Trojans faced No. 23 University of Sioux Falls and suffered a 63-47 defeat.

It was the first loss of the season for the Trojans as they dropped to 1-1. The Cougars won their first game of the season to raise their record to 1-1.

For over the first 16 minutes of the game DSU and USF kept the game close. After DSU took a 18-16 lead, the Cougars went on a 14-5 run to close the first half for a 32-23 halftime lead.

USF extended with a 13-0 run to make the largest lead in the game at 45-23. The Trojans ended their scoring drought with 15:49 left in the second half. The Cougars kept their control in the second-half as they held on for the win.

USF had a plus 13 rebounding edge over the Trojans, 47-34. The Cougars shot 38.2 percent compared to the Trojans’ 32.2 percent.

Santino Clay led the Trojans’ offense with 15 points. He added seven rebounds. Jackson Parr scored eight points and Derek Kreutzfeldt and Brian Bolin each added six points.

Cougar Matt Malloy went 9-for-18 from the field, 2-for-6 from the three point arc and 7-for-10 from the free throw line for 27 points. Thomas Frames added 10 points. De’Shawn Howard had 10 rebounds.

Dakota State will face Missouri Valley College on the second day of the USF/Famous Dave’s Classic at the Stewart Center. Tip-off is slated at 4 p.m.
