Trojans lose to Cougars in "Dig Pink" match

MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team returned home for a three-match home stand Tuesday. The Trojans hosted University of Sioux Falls Cougars in a "Dig Pink" match at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Cougars defeated the Trojans in three sets.
The Trojans suffered their third straight match and dropped to 8-16 overall record. The Cougars snapped their three-match losing streak to raise their overall record to 16-18.
In the opening set, the Cougars used a 14-9 run to break a 10-10 tie. The Trojans, however, used a 5-0 run to tie the first set at 24. USF eventually won the first set by two points, 28-26.
USF won the second and third sets by identical scores of 25-14.
Ashley Schulte led the Trojans with nine kills. Vicki Kaul added seven kills and Stephanie Kruggel five. Mollie Merriam recorded 12 set assists and Mati Salva added 11 assists.
Rachael Jensen recorded two service aces for the Trojans.
Shelby Tollefson had 22 digs for DSU. Kruggel added 18 digs. Schulte and Kaul each had three block assists.
For the Cougars, Amber Sneller had nine kills. Kinzie VanVoorst added seven kills. Alyssa Chambers and Sarah Kohler each recorded six kills. Samantha Haffke had 19 set assists. Stephanie Moller added 10 set assists.
Moller had three service aces for the Cougars.
On defense, Rachel Heeney had 17 digs. VanVoorst added 13 digs. Chambers had six block assists and one block solo. Sneller added five block assists.
The Cougars out-hit the Trojans 40-30 and .193 to .085. USF had eight team blocks compared to the Trojans' four. DSU had 79 digs to USF's 51.
Dakota State will return back to DAC Conference action this weekend. The Trojans will host Black Hills State on Friday night and South Dakota School of Mines Saturday night. All matches will be at the DSU Fieldhouse at 7 p.m.
