Women's Basketball: Trojans upset No. 15 USF in season home opener

MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University women's basketball team played their first home game Tuesday night at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans faced University of Sioux Falls, No. 15 in the NAIA Preseason Women's Basketball Division II Poll. DSU jumped to a 36-26 halftime lead with a 54.5 percent first-half shooting performance and held on for a 67-48 upset win over the Cougars.

The Trojans won their second straight game to open their season. It was the Cougars' first game of the season.

Alyssa Kirk was 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 behind the three-point arc for 15 points. Donna Lavea added 13 points. Katie Bourk had seven assists.

The Trojans had a 44-27 rebounding edge over USF. Dwayana Pullum had seven rebounds and Kirk added six.

Three Cougars players scored eight points - Elizabeth Hildreth, Becky Christofferson and Cominique Schuler. Hildreth had six rebounds.

DSU shot 46.2 percent from the field compared to the Cougars' 34.5. The Trojans made seven 3-pointers to USF's three.

Dakota State will play in the Morningside Classic this weekend on the campus of Morningside College. The Trojans will face Briar Cliff on Friday night at 5 p.m. On Saturday afternoon, DSU will face No. 4 Hastings College, the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball national runner-up last year, at 1 p.m.
