Women's Basketball: Trojans lose in closing seconds to Tigers

MITCHELL, S.D. - The Dakota State University women's basketball team traveled to the Corn Palace to face their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan Tuesday night.  Dakota Wesleyan used their advantage at the free-throw line to hand the Trojans an 84-79 non-conference defeat.

It was the Trojans third straight loss after opening the season 2-0.  Dakota Wesleyan raised their record to 2-2.

The Tigers held a one point lead at halftime, 37-36.  Both teams traded leads in the second half before the Tigers went on an 8-2 run to make it 75-68 with 2:27 left in regulation.  The Trojans rallied back to tie the game at 77-77 with 42 seconds left.  Tiger Maggie Malloy scored a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to put the Tigers up 80-77.  The Trojans missed their shots as Tiger Allison Johnson made four straight free throws to make the final score 84-79 in favor of the Tigers.

Sophia Perez came off the bench for the Trojans with a double-double.  She scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.  Perez went 7-for-13 from the field, including a 4-for-6 night from the 3-point line.  Ellesse Washington added 17 points.  Katie Bourk scored 13 points and dished out seven assists.  Alyssa Kirk had 12 points.

Malloy led the Tigers with 20 points and Johnson had 19 points.  Elizabeth Lamb scored 11 points.  Ashley Mailey had 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Dakota Wesleyan took advantage of the free throws, going 23-for-29 compared to the Trojans' 0-for-1.  DSU went 15-for-38 from the 3-point line compared to the Tigers' 9-for-24.  The Trojans and Tigers were even in rebounding with 37 each and both shot 46 percent from the field.

The Trojans will try to bounce back as they face Dordt College on Tuesday, Nov. 17th.  The non-conference game will be held in Sioux Center, Iowa at 7 p.m.
