Women's Basketball: Trojans suffer second straight loss

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - On the second day of the Morningside Classic at the RSVC-Allee Gym, the Dakota State University faced their former longtime head coach Jeff Dittman and his No. 4 Hastings College. The Broncos raced to an 18-8 lead in opening minutes of the game. Hastings went on and control the lead through out the game and defeated the Trojans 87-63.

The loss dropped the Trojans to the .500 mark at 2-2. Hastings won their third straight game to raise their record to 3-1.

Hastings raced to a 53-23 halftime lead and controlled the second half. The Trojans outscored the Broncos 40-34 in the second half.

The Broncos shot 50 percent from the field compared to the Trojans' 37.5 percent. Hastings was 13-for-26 from the three-point arc compared to the Trojans’ 5-for-18.

Hastings won the rebounding battle with 41 rebounds to DSU's 30.

Alyssa Kirk and Sophia Perez each scored 12 points for the Trojans. Donna Lavea and Allegra Kohley each had six rebounds.

Five Hastings players scored in double figures led by Heather McKeon's 26 points. She went 9-for-15 from the field, including 8-for-13 from the three-point line. Lindsay Ducey added 19 points and Sophia McDermott had 12 points. Alicia Statler had 11 points and Kim Faimon scored 10 points. McDermott dished out six assists.

Statler grabbed 10 rebounds for Hastings. Faimon added seven rebounds, six steals and five assists.

The Trojans will continue their road play as they travel to Mitchell, S.D. on Tuesday. They will face their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in a non-conference game at the Corn Palace. Tip-off is slated at 7 p.m.
