KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that a total of 254 women's and 170 men's cross country runners have been named 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Women's/Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athletes. Four DSU runners had been named to this honor. In addition, one DSU runner was named to NAIA Champions of Character award.
The announcement was made one day prior to the Women's and Men's Cross Country National Championships in Vacouver, Wash. The nominations were made by each institution's head coach.
A student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved at least junior academic status to qualify.
The four Trojan runners are:
- Tyler Van Peursem - Senior - Sioux Falls, S.D. - Computer and Network Security major - son of Kevin and Shelly Van Peursem.
- Clarice Bauer - Senior - Madison, S.D. - Exercise Science major - daughter of Bruce and Karen Bauer.
- Suzanne Swett - Senior - Platte, S.D. - Exercise Science major - daughter of Richard and Barbara Swett.
- Samantha Warnke - Junior (Senior academic) - Fairfax, S.D. - Exercise Science major - daughter of Tim and Brenda Warnke.
Anthony Drealan was named 2009 NAIA Cross Country Champions of Character award. He was chosen by his coaches and the University because of his leadership skills and the examples he has set for his teammates.
After coming off a frustrating year last season recovering from mono, Drealan had an outstanding summer of training and returned again as one of DSU's top cross country runners. He finished first for the Trojans in six of eight cross country meets this season.
Drealan was the top DSU finisher at NAIA Cross Country National Championship meet on Nov. 21st and earned NAIA All-American honor. Anthony is the son of Wayne and Heidi Drealan of Fulda, Minn. He is a senior Computer Education major at Dakota State University.
