Trojans' rally fall short to Mustangs in men's basketball action Monday

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Dakota State University men's basketball team traveled to RVSC-Allee Gym to take on Morningside College in a final tune-up Monday night before returning back to DAC Conference play. The Mustangs jumped to an 11-0 lead in the opening minutes and held on to defeat the Trojans 60-48.
The Trojans suffered their fourth straight defeat and dropped to 5-7 overall. Morningside raised their record to 9-7.
DSU committed six turnovers in the first five minutes of the game. The Mustangs kept their lead between eight and 12 points throughout the first half. Morningside led 34-23 at halftime. The Mustangs shot 50 percent from the field (11-for-22) and 10-for-13 at the free-throw line in the first half. DSU went 9-for-26 (34.6 percent) from the field and 3-for-4 at the free-throw line.
The Trojans cut the deficit to six points (34-28) with 18:15 left in the second half. However, Morningside went on a 12-4 run to expand their lead to 46-32 with 11:05 remaining in the game. DSU could not get any closer than eight points (54-46 with 2:48 left in regulation) as the Mustangs closed the game with a 6-2 run.
Spencer Adams recorded a double-double with 12 points and gathered 14 rebounds off the bench for DSU. Everett Smith added nine points and dished out three assists. Bryce Snyder had eight points, grabbed five rebounds and stole the ball three times.
Four starters scored in double digits for Morningside. Eddie Marrs went 6-for-9 from the field for 13 points and had four steals. Mitch Carstens and Adam Palmer each added 12 points. Cory Gaston had 11 points. Marrs and Palmer each recorded five assists. Garth Hamilton had seven points and seven rebounds.
The Mustangs outshot the Trojans 46.5 percent to 36.4 percent. Morningside made 16 free throws in 20 attempts compared to the Trojans' 5-for-8.
The Trojans outrebounded Mustangs 36-27. DSU recorded 18 offensive rebounds compared to Mustangs' eight.
DSU will return to DAC Conference play this weekend at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans will host No. 11 Minot State on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, DSU will welcome Dickinson State at 6 p.m.
