WBK: Trojans overcome Hardrockers' second-half surge 74-72

RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Dakota State University women's basketball team attempted to bounce back Friday night as they faced South Dakota School of Mines at the King Center. The Trojans recorded a road win over the Hardrockers in a thrilling game, 74-72.
The win lifted the Trojans' overall record to 7-9 and 2-2 in the DAC conference. It was the Trojan's third straight game that was decided by two points. The Hardrockers fell to 8-10 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
The Trojans led 36-28 few minutes before intermission. SD School of Mines cut the deficit to 36-34 at halftime and continued their 15-0 run (span in the closing minutes of the first-half and early second-half) to overtake a 43-36 lead with under 18 minutes to go.
SD School of Mines held a 69-58 lead with 3:15 to go in the game. The Trojans took advantage of their own clutch shooting and SD Mines' turnovers where the Trojans used a 16-3 closing run to secure the victory.
Trojan Donna Lavea went 9-for-11 from the field and 3-for-7 at the free-throw line for 21 points. She grabbed six boards, blocked shots two times and stole the ball three times. Katie Bourk drained three 3-pointers and went perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line for 13 points. Ellesse Washington added 10 points and Alyssa Kirk had nine points. Angela Green had eight points and gathered seven rebounds. Yui Onodera dished out four assists.
For SD School of Mines, Bethany Holyoak recorded a double-double with 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Ariel Granillo had 15 points. Jerika Ihlen added 13 points and gathered seven rebounds. Shalane Hampp had five assists.
The Trojans shot 46.2 percent (24-for-52) from the field compared to the Hardrockers' 42.3 percent (30-for-71). DSU had eight 3-pointers compared to SD School of Mines' three. The Trojans went 18-for-28 at the free-throw line, while the Hardrockers were 9-for-18.
SD School of Mines outrebounded the Trojans 52-36. The Hardrockers had 20 offensive rebounds compared to the Trojans' five.
The Hardrockers scored 50 points inside the paint compared to DSU's 30.
DSU will take on No. 13 Black Hills State in a DAC Conference game in Spearfish, S.D. Saturday. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. (CT)/4 p.m. (MT) at the Donald E. Young Gymnasium.
