MBK: Trojans lose in a nail-biter with Yellow Jackets 68-66

SPEARFISH, S.D. - The Trojan men's basketball team faced Black Hills State, 2009 DAC Men's Basketball defending champions, at the Donald E. Young Gymnasium Saturday night.  The Trojans suffered a nail-biter loss to the Yellow Jackets 68-66.

The Trojans dropped to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in the DAC.  Black Hills State raised their record to 13-6 and 3-2 in the conference.  The Yellow Jackets moved in a six-way tie for DAC's first place with a 3-2 conference record with Minot State, Dickinson State, Jamestown, SD School of Mines and Valley City State.

The Trojans took a 7-0 early lead in the game with two minutes and four seconds elapsed in the game.  The Yellow Jackets replaced all the starters and scored 15 of the next 21 points.  Black Hills State held a two-point lead at halftime 37-35.

The Trojans had a chance to tie or take the lead under a minute remaining but was whistled for three-second in the key.

Everett Smith had 15 points, six assists and six rebounds for the Trojans.  He shot 7-for-15 from the field.  Brad Martin went 4-for-7 from the 3-point line for 12 points off the bench.  Bryce Snyder added 11 points and gathered six rebounds.  Derek Kreutzfeldt and Santino Clay each scored nine points.

For Black Hills State, Luke Enos went 10-for-18 from the field for 22 points.  Cain Atkinson added 19 points.  Clay Pottorff had nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Trojans shot 49.1 percent from the field (27-for-55) compared to the Yellow Jackets' 47.1 percent (24-for-51).  DSU had 10 3-pointers while the Yellow Jackets had five.

Black Hills State made 15 free-throws compared to the Trojans' two.

Dakota State will return home on Friday and Saturday for a pair of DAC conference games.  The Trojans will welcome Jamestown on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.  On Saturday night, DSU will host Valley City State at 6 p.m.  All games will be at the DSU Fieldhouse.
