Photo by Scott VoigtMADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University women's basketball team returned home Friday night as they faced DAC's co-leader Jamestown College at the DSU Fieldhouse.  After a sluggish first-half from both teams, a surge from Jamestown in the second-half defeated the Trojans 66-52.

The Trojans suffered their fifth loss in the last six games and dropped to 7-11 overall and 2-4 in the DAC.  Jamestown, No. 6 in the latest NAIA Women's Basketball Division II Poll, lifted their overall record to 16-4 and 5-1 in the conference.

With Jamestown leading 8-6 with 14:40 to go in the first-half, the Jimmies went on a 9-0 scoring tear.  DSU went on a 14-5 run to cut the deficit to 22-20 at halftime.  Jamestown went 7-for-23 (30.4 percent) from the field in the first-half, but nailed down five 3-point field goals.  Dakota State shot 8-for-28 from the field (28.6 percent) and went 0-for-8 from the 3-point line in the first-half.

The Trojans tied the game three times in the early second-half at 22, 25 and 27.  Jamestown went on an 18-7 run to take a 45-34 lead with 11:35 left to go in regulation.

DSU cut the deficit to seven points (58-51) with less than three minutes to go, but could not get any closer.  The Jimmies closed the game with an 8-1 run to secure the victory.

Ellesse Washington led the Trojans with 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.  Donna Lavea added nine points and gathered eight rebounds.  She recorded four blocked shots.  Allegra Kohley netted in eight points off the bench.  Alyssa Kirk and Lashonda Martin each scored seven points.

Giuli Varriano scored 16 points and went 7-for-7 at the free-throw line for Jamestown.  She grabbed nine rebounds and four steals.  Katie O'Neill added 12 points and dished out eight assists.  She stole the ball four times.  Ali Edwards scored nine points off the bench and recorded two blocked shots.

Jamestown shot 36.7 percent from the field (18-for-49) compared to the Trojans' 30.4 percent (17-for-56).  The Jimmies went 7-for-17 from the 3-point line compared to the Trojans' 2-for-17.

The Jimmies were 23-for-29 from the free-throw line.  The  Trojans went 16-for-24 at the free-throw line.

The status for Valley City State-Dakota State game tomorrow (Jan. 23rd) is in question.  It will be determined at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, if the game will be scheduled on time.  Please stay tuned to the Dakota State Athletics homepage or listen to the KJAM Radio for any updates.
