MBK: Dakota State Trojans can't rise above Comets

January 29, 2010

Box Score @ Mayville State

The Trojans held a 53-47 advantage with two minutes left to go, but the Comets nailed some clutch shots and came back for the win by the score of 59-57 at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.

Costly turnovers played a large role in DSU's loss to Mayville State, according to Gary Garner, DSU coach.

"We were up four or five and suffered three trips where we didn't get any good looks.  We need to fix that," he said.

DSU held the Comets to just 34.6 percent shooting from the field in the first half, but Mayville shot 54 percent in the second period.

"We need to look at the tape and see our defensive lapses," said Garner.

The Trojans benefited from a key offensive possession with five minutes to go as DSU's Eric Bauder nailed a layup and was fouled.  He made his bonus free throw to give DSU a 49-44 lead with five minutes left.

From that point on, Mayville owned the paint and Adam Ross scored a clutch 3-pointer to give the Comets their first conference win.

DSU made an effort to give Bryce Snyder the ball more in this game.  The plan worked.  Snyder nailed 17 points and went 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

Derek Kreutzfeldt scored eight points in 33 minutes of play for DSU.  Santino Clay scored six points and was 0-for-2 from the free throw line.  He was also whistled for a technical foul in his five-foul night.

Mayville State, 9-13 overall and 1-7 in the conference, was led by Ross, who scored 17 points.

The Trojans will host Mount Marty at the DSU Fieldhouse on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Madison Chamber of Commerce Night.

The Trojans are now 7-12 on the season and 3-5 in the conference.
