Box Score @ Mayville State

Dakota State University women's basketball suffered a setback on Thursday in Mayville, N.D.  The Trojans lost 84-76 at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.

DSU senior Donna Lavea scored 21 points (her second straight game with 20 points or more), but it wasn't enough to match Mayville's hot shooting down the stretch.

It was the first conference win for Mayville.  The Comets are now 5-14 and 1-7 in the conference.

"Too many mistakes and not enough defensive intensity allowed them the opportunities they needed to win the game, "said DSU coach Joe Reints.  "They hit some big shots and got some big offensive rebounds, and that was the difference."

DSU allowed 51 points in the second half.

"The girls played good offensively in the second half, but when you give up 51 points, you're not going to win, and that's name of the game," said Reints.

Lavea picked her fifth foul with just over three minutes to go in the game.  Besides her game-high scoring, she contributed seven rebounds and a block.

"Donna had a tremendous night for us.  She is averaging a point or better a minute for the last two games," said Reints, "but she has to learn to stay out of foul trouble and make adjustments."

DSU's Katie Bourk scored the first points of the second frame and started a 3-point barrage.  She scored six points beyond the 3-point arc in the second half and scored 15 points overall.

Ellesse Washington added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Trojans.

Alyssa Kirk and Lashonda Martin both netted nine points for DSU, all coming on three-pointers in the second half.

DSU went 15-of-19 from the free throw line.

The Trojans will travel to Dickinson, N.D. on Feb. 5 for their next game.

"We learned that any team in the conference is really good if you don't do the little things that you need to do to win games.  We didn't do that tonight," said Reints.

The Trojans record dropped to 8-12 overall and 3-5 in the DAC.
