DSU coach Amy Veenhof said that teams across the country participate in "Dig Pink" night, but most programs elect to send funds to the "Set Out Foundation."

This year, however, DSU's volleyball team passed on the $1,600 in proceeds to the Madison Community Hospital hospice program.

Team member Rachael Jensen said the local hospice program helped the spouse of someone within the university's athletic department.

"We wanted to keep it in the community," Jensen said.  "I was surprised at how much we raised."

Student raised funds by seeking donations from local businesses, holding both a raffle and a silent auction, and selling pink T-shirts, pink suckers, pink lemonade and pink balloons.  Pink flowers were given to people affected by breast cancer, and a breast cancer survivor was invited to serve the first serve of the game.

Tie-dyed warm-up shirts were also made for both the DSU and University of Sioux Falls teams.

"We did so many different activities," Veenhof said.  "Everything we did was really successful."

Veenhof said that close to 50 Madison businesses contributed toward the team's fund-raising efforts in some way.
